The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its track and field academic awards this week and Salisbury University's men's and women's teams were each honored, along with junior Kara Tolson.

Tolson, who earlier this year was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, was named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team after finishing the year with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.51.

On the track, Tolson was one of the top sprinters in Division III this season. She broke the school record multiple times in the 200-meter dash, including during the 2013 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships where she ran the race in 24.65 seconds.

Tolson won three Capital Athletic Conference championships during the outdoor season, sweeping the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the championships, hosted by Salisbury University, and was on the 4x400-meter relay championship team, as well.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met either of the following athletic standards: a student-athlete must have competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship or finished the regular season ranked in the national top 35 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 25 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.

Salisbury was also honored with both the men's and women's teams earning All-Academic Team accolades. The women's team posted a 3.39 GPA while the men came in with a 3.14 GPA. Each team posted strong team scores at the NCAA outdoor championships with the men placing 13th and the women finished 26th.

To qualify for a team award, the squad must have a cumulative GPA of 3.10 through the end of the 2012-13 academic year.

Tolson was the only female representative from the CAC, while the Salisbury men's and women's teams were the only CAC teams to qualify for the honor.
