Christopher Newport Takes Third Straight CAC Women's Indoor Track & Field Crown

Christopher Newport tallied 146 points to claim its third straight CAC Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship on Sunday at the Freeman Center. Since joining the CAC in the 2013-14 school year, the Captains are now a perfect three-for-three at the indoor meet.

CNU's 146 team points, which included six gold medal performances, outdistanced Wesley (116 points), Salisbury (76 points), Mary Washington (63 points), York (61 points), Frostburg State (24 points) and Penn State Harrisburg (10 points) in the team standings. 

On an individual level, Logan Harrington and Lydia Cromwell led the Captains as both standouts won a pair of individual titles. Harrington walked away with the mile and 800 crowns, while Cromwell led the way in the 3000 and 5000.  Harrington's 2:18.15 performance in the 800 was a conference championship meet record.

The Captains also gained first-place awards in the CAC record-seting Distance Medley Relay, led by Harrington, and by freshman Hannah Bowden in the long jump.

Wesley's second-place finish was the team's best-ever performance in a CAC track & field championship.  Evelina Sloboh (60) and Elizsha Streeter (400) were dominant in the sprints to lead the Wolverines.

Salisbury was paced by two individual championships by junior Meghan McGowan and sophomore Christine Randall, while one school record was set and four personal records were bested.  McGowan took first in the high jump with a top leap of 5' 4.5" for her second-straight CAC title in the event.  Randall placed first in the triple jump with a 35' 8.75" effort, also marking her second-consecutive title.

The highlight for fourth-place Mary Washington came in the weight throw, where seniors Elysa Baker and Taylor Cockerille and junior Sheree Turner took the top three spots, all breaking personal bests. Baker claimed a new conference record in first with a throw of 54 feet, 0.5 inches. Turner finished second at 51 feet, 3.75 inches, and Cockerille was third at 46 feet, 6.25 inches.  Cockerille then finished first in the shot put, with a throw of 42 feet, 0.5 inches with another personal record, and Turner took second in the event at 41 feet, three inches.

York placed fifth in the seven-team meet, receiving second place finishes from Alicia Dillman in the 5K, Kacey Fogelsanger in the 3K as well as both the distance medley relay and the 4x100 relay teams.  Dillman's performance in the 5K was supported by teammates Kathleen Cannonand Kristi Wandzilak, who placed third and fourth, respectively in the event.

Sixth-place Frostburg State featured the performances of sophomore sprinter Kayla Truesdel,whose best effort came in the 200-meter dash as she raced to a win in 25.73, setting a new CAC meet and CAC Indoor Championship record. Her time also qualified her for the ECAC Championships in the 200 for the fourth-consecutive meet.  In the 60-meter dash, Truesdel captured second place in an ECAC qualifying time of 7.74. 
 
Penn State Harrisburg, in its third season of sponsoring varsity track & field, secured the first women's championship performance since joining the CAC at Sunday's championship meet.  Ashley Williams took home the women's 60 meter hurdle title to pick up all 10 PSH points.  Williams helped the women to almost double their team point output from the previous year's CAC Championships with her 9.03 finish in the hurdles, breaking the CAC record in the victory.
