Frostburg State's Sarah Stephens And Wesley's Carle Ax Named To ESPN Academic All-District Volleyball Team
Frostburg's Sarah Stephens and Wesley's Carle Ax were named to the 2010 ESPN College Division Academic All-District II women's soccer teams, coordinated by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Stephens, earning her second career ESPN Academic All-District nod, was a first-team All-District II honoree and will advance to the national Academic All-America ballot. Ax earned second-team All-District recognition.
To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
College Division Academic All-District II team members were selected from NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA teams in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
Stephens is a four-year starter and two-time all-conference
first-team selection for the Bobcats when they were members of
the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) prior to
joining the Capital Athletic Conference for the 2010 season.
She is third in school history in career kills (1,598) and fifth in
career digs (1,159).
This fall, Stephens has helped the Bobcats to a 31-3 overall record
and a perfect 8-0 slate in the CAC. FSU, ranked third in the
NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional poll, earned the top seed in the CAC
Tournament and will host the championship on Saturday, Nov. 6.
Stephens leads the Bobcat offensive attack this season with 515
kills, averaging 4.40 per set. She leads the CAC in both categories
and is 12th in the country in kills per set. She has recorded 10 or
more kills in all but two matches this year and has surpassed 20
kills in a match six times. The two-time CAC Player of the Week has
posted 19 double-doubles this season in kills and digs.
Stephens, a six-time Dean's List student, carries a 3.96 grade
point average and is majoring in busniess administration with a
minor in math. She is a three-time AMCC all-academic team honoree
and was named to the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District
II third team last season.
Ax, a mathematics major, has a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She is also the first Wolverine volleyball player to earn a spot on the Academic All-District Team in the program's five years of existence.
On the volleyball court, Ax ranks among the Capital Athletic Conference leaders with 67 service aces. She also served as one of Wesley's primary setters, leading the team with 414 assists. Ax was second on the team with 169 kills and 196 digs, while her 69 blocks were third on the team.
