Frostburg State Selects Rebecca Fletcher As New Volleyball Coach

Frostburg State University Director of Athletics Troy A. Dell has announced the hiring of Rebecca Fletcher as the school's new volleyball coach following a national search.

Fletcher joins the Frostburg coaching staff after a four-year stint as both the head men's and women's volleyball coach at the State University of New York Institute of Technology (SUNYIT). Fletcher accomplished a lot in four years with the Wildcats, turning around a struggling women's program while starting the men's program from scratch in 2008.

On the women's side, Fletcher led SUNYIT to three North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament appearances and a pair of runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2009. She was named the league's Coach of the Year in 2008 and won 61 total matches in the last three years.

For the men, Fletcher guided the team to five wins in its inaugural season in 2008 while in 2010, the men's squad led the nation in team and individual digs. This spring, the Wildcats made their first postseason appearance in the program's brief history.

In 2009, Fletcher was honored by the AVCA as one of thirty up-and-coming coaches under the age of 30 years old in the sport of volleyball at all collegiate levels.

"Frostburg State is a beautiful school with a great athletic tradition, and I am very excited to becoming part of the community. Not only will I have an opportunity to build upon the great foundation that exists in the volleyball program, but I look forward to taking the program to the next level."

Prior to her time at SUNYIT, she served as a graduate assistant at Utica College for one year in 2006.

Fletcher graduated in 2006 with a bachelor of arts degree in biology and pre-health from Washington & Jefferson College. She was a three-time All-Presidents' Athletic Conference selection and was named the league's Freshman of the Year in 2002. In 2005, W&J won the PAC Tournament title and advanced to the ECAC Tournament.

Fletcher takes over the reins of a Frostburg volleyball program steeped in tradition. FSU volleyball, entering just its 17th year as a varsity sport, has advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 10 of the previous 16 seasons, including a current run of four-straight appearances from 2007-2010. Last fall, the Bobcats hosted the NCAA Tournament Regional and advanced to the regional championship match, both for the first time in the history of the program.
