Salisbury And Stevenson Gain Bids To NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship Tournament

Salisbury and Stevenson, the top two CAC teams in the regular season and the finalists in the conference playoffs, are both going to advance to the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

As the CAC playoff champion, Salisbury gained the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Stevenson, which boasts the same overall record at Salisbury (31-3), gained an at-large bid to the post-season championship.

Two of Stevenson's three losses this season were vs. Salisbury, including a 3-0 decision in Saturday's title match.  However, the Mustangs defeated several other NCAA Tournament-bound teams this year, including Johns Hopkins, Lebanon Valley and Gallaudet.

The Sea Gulls got their directive on Monday as the NCAA released the field of 64 teams, with Salisbury heading to Christopher Newport University, for the eight-team regional tournament. This will be Salisbury's seventh NCAA tournament appearance.

Salisbury will open play against Gallaudet University on Friday. It will mark the first match between these two teams, who spent 16 years together in the Capital Athletic Conference, since the 2010 season when Salisbury claimed a three-game victory. The Sea Gulls have won the last five meetings in the series and hold a 27-26 edge all time.

The winner of the Salisbury-Gallaudet match will take on the winner of host Christopher Newport and Maryville (Tenn.) College on Saturday. Salisbury played CNU once this season, taking the match to five sets before falling.

The other side of the bracket at CNU will feature Randolph Macon College against Johns Hopkins University and Emory University against Richard Stockton College.

The winner of the regional final, scheduled for Sunday, will advance to the NCAA championship weekend on Nov. 18-20 in St. Louis.

Stevenson will travel to suburban Philadelphia for Friday's first-round match against Hiram.  Regional Tournament host Eastern, along with Penn State-Altoona, Cabrini, Juniata, Lebanon Valley and Mount Union, will also battle in the weekend event.

Following a 31-win season and a second-place finish in the CAC Volleyball Championship, the Stevenson women's volleyball team has been selected to the program's first-ever NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship.

The Mustangs (31-3), who were ranked at No. 4 last week's NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region poll, are the fifth-seed in their respective region and will play fourth-seeded Hiram (26-8) on Friday, November 11 at Neumann University's 1,600-seat Mirenda Center beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Eastern (32-2) is the top-seed and will play eighth-seeded Penn State Altoona (18-11) at 8:00 p.m. Juniata (25-7) will be the second-seed and face seventh-seeded Cabrini (22-10) 3:00 p.m. Friday's first game will feature third-seeded Mount Union (24-7) and sixth-seeded Lebanon Valley (22-9).

Stevenson, which won a school-record 19 games before falling to Salisbury in the CAC title game, is one win shy of the school record for wins in a season set by the 2008 team that finished 32-8 and advanced to the ECAC Division III South Championship.

The Mustangs have faced just one of this weekend's opponents, Penn State Altoona. Sophomore Christine Isenberg totaled 16 kills and 10 digs as Stevenson posted a 26-19, 25-17, 21-25, 25-11 victory over the Nittany Lions on September 17 at St. Mary's (Md.).
