St. Mary's Shuts Out Wesley During Seahawk Invitational To Clinch 5th Seed In CAC Volleyball Tournament

St. Mary's Shuts Out Wesley During Seahawk Invitational To Clinch 5th Seed In CAC Volleyball Tournament

St. Mary's, which had clinched a playoff berth earlier this week, used a 3-0 victory Saturday against Wesley to move into a tie for fifth place with York in the final regular-season volleyball standings and the fifth seed in the upcoming conference playoffs.

The Eagles are the fifth seed in the playoffs, and York is the No. 6 seed, because SMC defeated YCP during the regular-season meeting.

The only other conference match of the busy "end-of-the-regular-season" weekend was Salisbury's 3-0 victory over Frostburg State in a tri-match with Va. Wesleyan.  The decision does not affect the tournament seeding for either team.

Salisbury is the regular-season champ and top seed.  FSU ends the season tied with Mary Washington for third place in the standings, but the Bobcats will be the third seed and UMW the fourth seed because FSU defeated the Eagles during the regular season.

The CAC Tournament starts Tuesday, when #5 St. Mary's travels to #4 UMW while sixth-seeded York travels to defending CAC champ and third-seeded Frostburg State.  Both matches are slated to start at 7 p.m.

In Thursday's semifinals, also scheduled for 7 p.m. starts, top-seeded Salisbury will host the winner of the SMC at UMW match while second-seeded Stevenson will take on the survivor of the YCP at FSU battle.

The championship match is slated for a 6 p.m. start at the home court of the highest-seeded team to qualify for the event.
