The No. 14 Salisbury University volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 win, against Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) College, in its first-ever home NCAA tournament match on Friday night at Maggs Physical Activities Center.

The Sea Gulls won the match 25-11, 25-11, 25-9 to move on to the second round against Richard Stockton College of New Jersey on Saturday.

"I thought it was a real team effort," Salisbury Head Coach Margie Knight said. "Everyone really stepped up and everyone that went in brought something to the court and we're happy to be moving on to the second round."

After falling behind 4-2 in the opening set, the Sea Gulls (35-3) rattled off 10-straight points, including four kills from freshman Ashlyn Tapley and three by senior Kelly Vieira. Tapley put home six kills in the opening set while Vieira had five.

The Salisbury run gave the Gulls a 12-4 lead, and the Knights were unable to close the deficit inside seven the rest of the way.

A service ace by senior Carley Todd sparked another Salisbury run, this time a six-point spurt, to push the lead to 18-5. Todd had another ace during the run, finishing the match with four.

In the second, the teams went back and forth early, with three ties, before Salisbury took control. Todd and senior Chelsea Glowacki came up with a block of Kayla Kurka to break a 3-3 deadlock and Salisbury did not trail again in the set. Two kills by Vieira and another by Todd and Salisbury was out to a 7-3 lead, prompting a Mount Saint Mary timeout.

Vieira had a match-best nine kills, with no errors, on just 13 swings for a .692 hitting percentage. Salisbury hit .400 in the second set and .343 for the match.

The Knights' timeout only slowed Salisbury momentarily as the Sea Gulls continued to pull away to claim the set.

Salisbury did not let up in the final set, pushing ahead to a 10-2 lead on the strength of four service aces by Michelle Meehan. The sophomore finished with five in the match.

Meehan, the Salisbury libero, paced the Sea Gull defense which had 48 digs and eight blocks, holding the Knights to a -.102 hitting percentage. Meehan had seven digs while freshman Kacey Franz had a match-high nine.

Todd finished with 21 assists while junior Sarah Hall had three blocks (two solo) and Glowacki had a solo block and two block assists.

Senior Mary Ann Raftery led the Knights with four kills and five digs.

Salisbury advances to the second round of the regional on Saturday, taking on Richard Stockton, which defeated Johns Hopkins University in five sets. The two teams met earlier this year with the Ospreys taking a 3-0 win. Richard Stockton is one of just two teams to hand Salisbury a defeat this season.
