Marymount Volleyball drops 3-1 decision to No. 25 Carnegie Mellon to conclude 2015 campaign

The Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball team fell to No. 25 Carnegie Mellon University on Wednesday night in the first round of the ECAC Division III South Championship, 3-1 (27-29, 22-25, 25-23, 22-25), to bring its 2015 campaign to a close.

Although the set count sways in favor of the Tartans, the Saints were in contention throughout the match, not dropping a set by any more than three points. Furthermore, Marymount led in several categories for the match individually. Senior Courtney Phung paced the defense with a match-high 19 digs, while junior Cailyn Thomas led two categories in kills and solo blocks with 15 and five, respectively. The five solo blocks mark a new career high for Thomas, as well.

Carnegie Mellon battled back twice in the first two sets to overtake the Saints' lead to grab an early 2-0 score, but the blue and white turned the advantage in the third set. All knotted up at 14-14 in the middle part of the set, a kill by junior Mallory Mitchell gave Marymount the advantage for the remainder of the game, eventually ending on a kill by freshman Caroline Hanson to tally a 25-23 victory.

The momentum was carried over to the fourth set, as the Saints opened up a five-point lead at 9-4, but the Tartans didn't go away. CMU worked to grab the advantage at 12-11 and maintained it throughout the rest of the game to seal up the match, 3-1.

Senior Morgan McAlpin and Phung concluded their careers with the Saints on Wednesday night, accumulating a 92-47 overall record while donning the blue and white. McAlpin concludes her career with 1,100 kills, while Phung finishes with 747 digs.

The Saints close out 2015 with an 18-11 overall record, marking their fourth-consecutive winning season, 13th in program history.
