Mary Washington Volleyball Sweeps Christopher Newport, Claims First CAC Title Since 1991

Mary Washington started strong and never looked back en route to a 3-0 victory over Christopher Newport in the CAC volleyball championship on Saturday in Fredericksburg, Va. Games scores were 25-13, 25-17, 25-14.

The CAC title was the second in program history for the Eagles and first since 1991, the first year of CAC volleyball. With the victory, the Eagles (28-3) secure the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UMW will learn its destination during the NCAA Selection show, which will air live on NCAA.com on Monday at 12:30 p.m.

With the defeat, the Captains (25-9) must hope for an at-large bid to NCAA's. The loss snapped CNU's three-year reign atop the CAC since joining the conference in 2013.

The Eagles were on target from the outset, making just four attacking errors all afternoon while hitting .398 as a unit, while limiting CNU to a .121 hitting percentage. Emma Olson led the way with 28 assists, seven digs, and five kills, while Rachel Hendricks and Savannah Powers notched 10 kills and three digs apiece for the Eagles, and Jenna Yost tallied 12 digs and five assists.

Briana Sutton led CNU with a match-high 11 kills, while Katie Piper added six.
