Marymount Volleyball Falls to Emerson in ECAC Semifinals

Marymount fell short in the ECAC volleyball semifinals on Sunday afternoon to Emerson, 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 25-17, 20-25, 14-16), drawing the Saints' season to a close. The Saints close out the season at 25-9 overall. 

The Saints were able to get ahead early in set one before the Lions rallied back to tie the game mid-set at 12 all. Both squads traded points through the remainder of the set until the Lions pulled out a close victory, 25-23. 

In set two Marymount jumped on top early after piecing together several small runs to lead, 15-8. The Saints kept swinging and never looked back before prevailing on top, 25-18. Junior Margaret McAlpin paced the Saints in set two, registering four kills. 

MU continued to find success on the offensive end, taking an early 5-2 lead in set three, led by sophomore Caroline Hanson who added three kills right away. The Lions evened things up at six, but it wasn't long before Marymount assumed another commanding lead, 14-10.  The blue and white took advantage of several Emerson errors and added two kills of their own to gain an eight-point advantage, 19-11. The Saints maintained their lead to finish out set three, 25-17, taking a 2-1 lead.

Both squads battled point-for-point through much of the fourth set with neither team seeing more than a two-point lead before the Lions pulled ahead 16-12. MU stayed within four of Emerson before falling short, 25-20.

Set five proved to be the toughest battle yet between the squads. The Saints clenched an early 3-0 lead following three-straight kills by seniors Cailyn Thomas and Emileigh Rettig. The momentum shifted in favor of the Lions as the squad pieced together a 4-0 run mid-set to pull ahead 7-6. The score continued to tilt back-and-forth forcing the set into extra points, before MU fell short 16-14.

Hanson paced the Saints all the way around, notching her fourth triple-double of the season with 11 kills, 10 digs and 33 assists. Thomas and McAlpin set the tone on offense, registering 14 kills apiece while hitting above .300. Junior Christine Tieman added 23 assists. Freshman libero Theresa Buscemi notched 13 digs to pace the Saints on defense.
