Mary Washington Volleyball Ousts Juniata, Moves on to NCAA Quarterfinals

Mary Washington defeated Juniata 3-1 in the regional final of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament on Sunday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va., sending the Eagles to the quarterfinals for the first time in program history. 

Freshman Savannah Powers scored a team-high 13 kills en route to Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors, helping the Eagles improve to 31-3 on the season. The win advances UMW to the national quarterfinals on Thursday to face Washington (Mo.) (25-10) in Oshkosh, Wisc. 

The other Elite Eight matchups will feature Southwestern (Texas) (33-4) vs. Tufts (27-3), Northwestern St. Paul (33-4) vs. Eastern (32-5), and Emory (33-5) vs. Calvin (30-1). 

The Eagles are the third CAC team in the last five years to advance to the final eight, joining Christopher Newport (2014) and Salisbury (2012) as NCAA quarterfinalists. 

Powers had 13 kills in 26 attempts, added seven digs, and three aces. Emma Olson and Peyton Dunow were also selected to the all-tournament team, as Olson posted 35 assists and 10 digs, while Dunow scored nine kills and added seven digs.
