Southern Virginia Senior Hannah Allred Named CAC Volleyball Player of the Year; UMW's Berry, CNU's Birch Collect Major Awards

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Southern Virginia senior Hannah Allred was selected as the Player of the Year to highlight the 2017 All-CAC Volleyball Team. Mary Washington freshman Wren Berry and Christopher Newport head coach Lindsay Birch collected the other major awards as Rookie and Coach of the Year, respectively.

Allred, an outside hitter, becomes the first Southern Virginia player to earn Player of the Year honor since the Knights joined the conference in 2013. A 2016 All-CAC second team pick, she collected her second-straight All-CAC nod this fall.

Berry, a setter for UMW, is the fourth straight Eagle and seventh overall to earn Rookie of the Year accolades. UMW has the most Rookie of the Year winners in CAC history.

Birch was selected by her peers as Coach of the Year after guiding the Captains to a perfect CAC regular season and their fourth conference title in the last five years. Birch was also named Coach of the Year for three straight years from 2013-15. She becomes the third CAC coach to earn the award four times, joining Salisbury's Margie Knight (1998, 2004, 2008, 2012) and Cathoic's Nagy Abderlrazek (1994, 1999-2001) as four-time Coach of the Year recipients.

CNU led the All-CAC team with four all-star selections. Senior middle blocker Katelyn Newsome and sophomore outside hitter Katie Piper each made their way onto the All-CAC first team, earning the first all-star nods of their careers. Junior defensive specialist Josie Lucernoni and sophomore middle blocker Riley Garrison were named to the second team. Garrison was a repeat second-team pick for the Captains.

CAC runner-up Mary Washington landed three players on the All-CAC team. A pair of sophomores earned first team recognition - outside hitters Savannah Powers and Peyton Dunow. Powers was a first-teamer and CAC Rookie of the Year in 2016, whle it marks the first all-star honor for Dunow. Junior middle hitter Leslie Walters received second team accolades for the second year in a row for UMW. Walters was also Rookie of the Year in 2015.

Southern Virginia, Frostburg State, and York each earned two spots on the All-CAC squad. Joining Allred on the all-conference first team for Southern Virginia was fellow senior outside hitter Penny Gwynn, who collected her first all-star award of her career after helping the Knights to a third-place regular season finish and semifinal appearance.

The Frostburg State duo of senior outside hitter Naya Cheatem and senior defensive specialist Lindsey Scepura were both named to the second team for the Bobcats. Cheatem concludes her career as a three-time all-star, having earned first-team honors in both 2015 and 2016. Scepura secured second-team accolades for the second time in her career, also earning all-conference recognition in 2015.

York juniors Eryn Brady and Alexis Harbold were named All-CAC performers for the first time in their careers. Brady, an outside hitter, and Harbold, a libero, are the first Spartans to receive All-CAC honors since 2014.

Marymount, Salisbury, and Wesley were each represented by one player on the all-conference team. Marymount junior setter/right side hitter Caroline Hanson was a first-team selection for the Saints, which marked her first all-star honor. Salisbury junior outside hitter Nicole Venturelli picked up her second-straight All-CAC nod as a member of the first team. Venturelli was a second-team pick last fall. Wesley senior outside hitter Tionne Graves-Brown closes out her career as a second-team all-star, receiving all-conference honors for the first time.
