AVCA Division III All-America Team

Christopher Newport senior Katelyn Newsome collected honorable mention All-American accolades from the American Volleyball Coaches Association after piecing together a tremendous 2017 season with the Christopher Newport volleyball team.
 
The national award joins a growing list of honors bestowed upon Newsome for her efforts in 2017. She previously secured first-team All-Conference and All-Region accolades for her work.

Overall, Newsome is the 16th Captain in program history to earn All-American honors from the AVCA.
 
Anchoring the front row for Christopher Newport, Newsome starred as a middle blocker throughout the year. Electric on the defensive end, she ranked second in the conference and 19th nationally with 115 blocks. That total also places her ninth on the program's all-time single-season list.
 
Consistently effective on the defensive side, Newsome posted at least one block in 29 of her 32 appearances and had five or more on eight occasions. Her finest hour came against Southern Virginia on October 20 when she notched a career-high 11 rejections. That equaled the fourth-highest single-match total in program history. She also sent back 10 attack attempts against Salisbury in the CAC Semifinals on November 2.
 
Just as dominant on the offensive end, Newsome finished the year ranked second in the Capital Athletic Conference with a .270 hitting percentage. She averaged 2.04 kills per set while finishing the year with 233 total blasts. She reached double figures in 10 of her outings, including a career-high 18 darts at Stevens on September 16.
 
Along with her offensive showcase against Stevens, she added three other double-digit efforts against NCAA Tournament participants during the regular season. Newsome clocked 10 kills and hit .316 against No. 3 Southwestern on September 8 before punching 11 daggers while hitting .381 against No. 9 Juniata on September 22. Continuing to torch top-flight competition, she came back with 10 kills and a .400 hitting percentage against Wesleyan on September 23.
 
Showing off her work on both sides of the ball, Newsome registered a pair of double-doubles during the year. She recorded 10 kills and 11 blocks against Southern Virginia on October 20 before adding 10 of each against Salisbury in the CAC Semifinals. Putting that into perspective, in the 40-year history of the CNU volleyball program, there have only been 12 total matches during which a single player recorded at least 10 kills and 10 blocks. Newsome posted two of them in the span of 13 days.
 
Following her historic outing against Southern Virginia, Newsome was named the CAC Volleyball Player of the Week on October 23.
 
In addition to her work as a senior, Newsome wraps up her career ranked ninth in program history with a 0.88 blocks-per-set average over the course of her four-year tenure. Overall, the Newsoms, Virginia native registered 228 total blocks while also adding a 1.81 kills-per-set mark on the offensive end.
