Christopher Newport and Mary Washington Defend Home Courts in CAC Volleyball Semifinals

2017 CAC Volleyball Tournament Bracket

Christopher Newport and Mary Washington will meet in the CAC volleyball championship for the second straight season following semifinal wins on Thursday night. The top-seeded Captains downed fourth-seeded Salisbury 3-0, while the second-seeded Eagles swept past third-seeded Southern Virginia 3-0.

CNU (26-3) will host UMW (19-9) in the championship match on Saturday at noon in Newport News, Va. In last year's title match, UMW defeated CNU 3-0 to claim its second CAC title, snapping the Captains' three-year reign atop the conference.

In Thursday's semifinals, CNU topped Salisbury 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 25-13), earning their fifth straight trip to the CAC title round. Katelyn Newsome stepped up for the Captains with a double-double as the senior registered 10 blocks and 10 kills while hitting at a .429 clip. Meanwhile, Katie Piper unloaded a team-high 14 kills, and Josie Lucernoni registered 20 digs while converting all 13 of her reception attempts. The setback drops Salisbury to 19-10 overall. Nicole Venturelli led SU with a match-high 21 kills.

In the other CAC semifinal, UMW kept its hopes of repeating as CAC champions alive, defeating Southern Virginia 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-22) at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles were led by Leslie Walters and Savannah Powers, who each recorded seven kills, while Peyton Dunow and Tenley Hares each added six. Wren Berry recorded 22 assists and six digs, while Dunow led with 11 digs. Penny Gwynn led the way for the Knights (22-8) with seven kills and seven digs.
