Salisbury Junior Nicole Venturelli Named CAC Volleyball Player of the Week

Salisbury junior Nicole Venturelli was named the CAC Player of the Week after averaging 5.14 kills and 3.43 digs per set in a 3-1 week for the Sea Gulls at the Knights Invitational hosted by Neumann. Venturelli tied her season-high with 19 kills in a 3-0 win over Neumann before breaking her season-high with 23 kills in a five-set loss to Cabrini. For the week Venturelli totaled 72 kills, a hitting percentage of .279, 28 digs, and two double-doubles. Her 178 kills and 4.34 kills per set currently ranks atop the CAC.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Mary Washington is ranked No. 22 and Christopher Newport is No. 24 in the American Volleyball Coaches' Association Sept. 12 National Rankings ... CNU went 3-1 at the Ducks Classic at Stevens, including a 3-2 victory over No. 19 Eastern. Josie Lucernoni became the first Captain to record two 25-dig efforts in a single season since four-time All-American libero Abby Hogge accomplished the feat in 2012. It also marked the first time a Captain registered at least 20 digs in both ends of a doubleheader since Rachel Close did it in 2013. Lucernoni averaged 4.88 digs per set during the week and was successful on 95 of her 103 reception attempts for the week ... Frostburg State senior Naya Cheatem captured All-Tournament team honors at the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic at Wooster over the weekend. In five matches last week, she smacked 45 kills, posted 15 digs and blocked three attacks for the Bobcats as they finished 3-2 ... Mary Washington sophomore Peyton Dunow hit .372 in three Eagle matches over the weekend, with 40 kills in three matches, including a career-high 21 kills in a 3-1 win over Franklin & Marshall on Saturday at Ithaca. She posted six kills against just one error against the Bombers, and followed with 13 kills, four aces, and 11 digs in a win over SUNY New Paltz. She capped her weekend with 21 kills, two aces, and 11 digs in the win over the Diplomats ... Marymount freshman Maggie Viniard, who missed the first four matches of the season due to injury to kick off her freshman season, collected her third-straight double-double for Marymount last Wednesday against Stevenson, posting a career-high 25 assists and adding 11 digs ... Meghan Kelley paced St. Mary's offensively in a 2-1 week for the Seahawks. Kelley collected her third double-digit kill game of the season with a match-best 13 kills in a four-set win over St. Elizabeth while adding a match-best eight kills in a sweep of Lancaster Bible ... Southern Virginia junior Kaely Rath recorded 10 kills in two sets in the Knights' only match of the week, leading all players ... Tionne Graves-Brown set a new match record in kills in Wesley's five-set victory over William Paterson. For the week, Graves-Brown tallied 43 kills and 36 digs during Wesley's three games ... York sophomore middle hitter Madyson Whitcomb led the Spartans to a 3-1 week with non-conference wins over Elizabethtown, Messiah and Houghton. For the week, Whitcomb notched 40 kills in 16 sets (2.50 kills per game) with a .315 attack percentage. She also had 15 total blocks (0.94 blocks per set) and had 48.5 points for the week. For the season, Whitcomb leads the Spartans with 105 kills in 46 sets played. She is hitting .288 while she also leads the team with 45 blocks (a team-high 11 solo blocks). Whitcomb leads York with 134.0 points, good for an average of 2.9 points per set.
