CNU's Sammy Carroll Earns Player & Rookie of the Year Honors to Highlight 2019 All-CAC Volleyball Teams
CAC - Christopher Newport freshman setter Sammy Carroll swept both 2019 CAC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors to highlight the 2019 All-CAC Volleyball team. Salisbury senior Hailey Dougherty collected CAC Defensive Player of the Year accolades, while Savannah Powers was named CAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Lastly, CAC regular season champions Christopher Newport and head coach Lindsay Birch took home 2019 CAC Coaching Staff of the Year recognition.
Carroll, the CNU setter, was named both CAC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year as she guided the Captains' offense to a 10-0 mark in league play. She becomes the third individual to sweep both honors and the first since former CNU standout Briana accomplished the feat in 2013. Carroll, who was named CAC Offensive Player of the Week three times this year, leads the CAC with 9.78 assists per set while the offense has hit .232 on the season.
Powers, an outside hitter, earned CAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition after proving herself as one of the best both on the court and in the classroom. Powers, the UMW SAAC President, has now collected four consecutive All-CAC first team accolades and was also Rookie of the Year in 2016. Powers has led the Eagles attack in 2019 to the tune of 3.13 kills per set (3rd in CAC) while hitting .248 with 1.25 digs per set.
Dougherty, a defensive specialist, was named CAC Defensive Player of the Year for the Sea Gulls. Dougherty boasted the best defensive stats by a wide margin as she anchored the Salisbury defense after she averaged 5.30 digs per set to lead the conference.
Christopher Newport was named the 2019 CAC Coaching Staff of the Year for the fifth time after head coach Lindsay Birch and her staff led the Captains to the CAC regular season title and a 24-8 overall record this fall.
