CNUs Carroll & Salisbury's Dougherty Selected CAC Volleyball Players of the Week

CAC -- The Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) has announced its weekly awards following the sixth week of the 2019 women's volleyball season. Christopher Newport freshman setter Sammy Carroll earned CAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades, while Salisbury senior Hailey Dougherty claimed CAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sammy Caroll - Christopher Newport

Freshman setter Sammy Carroll helped lead Christopher Newport to a pair of sweeps this week as she averaged 11.0 assists and 2.17 digs per set. The victories extended their win streak to 12 matches. On Wednesday in a 25-22, 25-17, 25-20 win at Southern Virginia, she tallied 28 assists to go with an ace, four digs, two kills, and a block. On Saturday in a 25-17, 25-22, 25-15 victory over arch-rival Mary Washington, she handed out 38 assists, a team-high nine digs, a block, and two kills to help the team hit a season-high .418, the highest hitting percentage for any CAC team this season.


DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hailey Dougherty - Salisbury

Salisbury senior Hailey Dougherty appeared in all seven sets across two matches for the Sea Gulls who went 1-1 last week, recording 45 total digs along the way. Dougherty continues to lead the conference with 345 total digs and 5.31 digs per set.

LEAGUE NOTES

Salisbury freshman Blair Pausic combined to record 70 assists across two matches for the Sea Gulls last week. Pausic also contribruted 14 digs, two blocks, a kill and one service ace while appearing in all seven sets...York senior Madyson Whitcomb led the Spartans to a 2-0 week as the Spartans have now won five straight and seven of their last eight. Whitcomb began the week with 8 kills and a .462 attack percentage in York's three set win at St. Mary's on Wednesday. She added one solo block and two block assists as she recorded 10 points for York. She followed that with 10 kills and one solo block in Saturday's 3-1 win over Southern Virginia. For the week, Whitcomb hit .324 with 18 kills in 37 attempts. She also had two solo blocks and two block assists in six sets played...Ellyse Sutliff led St. Mary's with 26 kills on the week. She also collected seven assists, one service ace, 18 digs, and two total blocks. The Seahawks finished 1-2 on the week, defeating Gallaudet 3-1...Emily Benedict led the Seahawks with 68 digs. She also recorded three service aces in a week where the Seahawks finished 1-2, defeating Gallaudet 3-1....Kendal Hall's cored 23 digs in Mary Washington's 3-1 win at Salisbury, and added 14 more in a 3-0 loss at CNU.
