CNU's Carroll & Garrison Sweep CAC Volleyball Weekly Honors After Captains Post 5-0 Week

CAC -- The Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) has announced its weekly awards following the fourth week of the 2019 women's volleyball season. Christopher Newport freshman setter Sammy Carroll earned CAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades, while CNU senior middle blocker Riley Garrison claimed CAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sammy Carroll - Christopher Newport

Christopher Newport freshman setter Sammy Carroll played a big part in a 5-0 week for Christopher Newport that saw the Captains drop just one set out of 16. Over the weekend, she was named the MVP of the Knights Invitational as CNU swept all four opponents to win the invitational. in 14 sets played, Carroll contributed 153 assists (10.93), including a career-high of 47 vs. Neumann and a career-best 13.33 per set vs. Catholic. She did more than just help others score as she tallied 11 kills, seven aces, 25 digs, and three blocks. Against William Peace on Tuesday, she posted 36 assists, four kills, two aces, and five digs. Versus Neumann, she added five kills, five digs, and three aces to her 47 assists. On Saturday, she totaled a combined two kills, 66 assists, two aces, 13 digs, and three blocks over six sets against Widener and Catholic.


DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Riley Garrison - Christopher Newport

The Captains went 5-0 on the week, and CNU senior middle blocker Riley Garrison played a big part in that, being named to the Knights Invitational All-Tournament team. In foru matches and 13 sets, she contributed 10 total blocks, including one of the solo variety. She also added on 36 kills, 2.77 per set, while hitting .516 for the week. Against William Peace, she registered four blocks, including a solo rejection, with five kills. She followed with an eight-kill performance on Friday vs. Neumann. She closed out the week on Saturday with six blocks combined in six sets against Widener and Catholic while tacking on 23 kills.

LEAGUE NOTES

York senior middle hitter Madyson Whitcomb had a big week for the Spartans as she earned All-Tournament team honors at the Misericordia Cougar Clash in Dallas, Pa. She had a big game in the loss to Cortland as Whitcomb had 12 kills with one error in 17 attempts as she hit .647 for the match. She added an assist, a service ace, two digs and five block assists for a team-leading 15.5 points. In the Spartans' 3-0 win over Misericordia, Whitcomb had seven kills and hit .462 (7-1-13) while she also had a pair of digs, a solo block and a block assist. Whitcomb ended the week with 12 kills and a .357 attack percentage in the loss to Oswego. She added an assist, a service ace, a dig and a block assist. For the week, Whitcomb hit .403 with 34 kills in 14 sets played, good for an average of 2.43 kills per set. She also had two assists, three service aces, eight digs and eight total blocks for 41.5 points...Salisbury sophomore OH Amanda Chew totaled 61 kills, 49 digs, 12 service aces and 10 blocks across four matches, including wins over UC Santa Cruz, Haverford and Lycoming at the Arcadia Classic last weekend. The sophomore matched a season-high with 22 kills in a loss to Arcadia on Sunday afternoon. Chew registered kill-dig double-doubles against Haverford and Arcadia. Chew currently leads the conference with 222 total kills and 4.04 kills per set...Hailey Dougherty continued to lead the Sea Gulls defensively, combining to record 76 total digs across four matches at the Arcadia Classic last week. The senior matched her season-high with 28 total digs in a five-set loss to Arcadia on Saturday afternoon. Dougherty leads the conference in both digs per set (5.04) and total digs (277)...Southern Virginia freshman OH Courtney Singleton shined in the for the Knights in their loss to undefeated Bridgewater with a career-high 18 kills at 4.50 kills per set while hitting .244. She contributed in the Knights' next two wins on Saturday over Mary Baldwin and Lynchburg combining for 23 kills....Mykynli Knight anchored the Southern Virginia back line averaging a 4.89 digs per set. The senior's strong play at libero helped guide the Knights to a 2-1 week with wins over Mary Baldwin and Lynchburg. She added six assists and a pair of service aces offensively.
