CNU's Crofford, SVU's Knight Earn CAC Volleyball Player of the Week Honors

CAC -- The Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) has announced its weekly awards following the fifth week of the 2019 women's volleyball season. Christopher Newport senior outside hitter Katie Crofford earned CAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades, while Southern Virginia senior libero Mykynli Knight claimed CAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Katie Crofford - Christopher Newport

Christopher Newport senior outside hitter Katie Crofford was named MVP of the Worthington Classic as the Captains won all four matches en route to extending its winning streak to 10. Crofford helped lead the Captains on both offense and defense this week, averaging 3.07 kills and digs per set to go with 3.5 points per set, four aces, and four blocks. She totaled 43 kills, 43 digs, and 49.5 points. She double-doubled against league rival York in a 3-1 victory with 14 kills, 15 digs, an assist, and ace, and two blocks (one solo). She followed later in the day with 11 kills, eight digs, two aces, and a block in a 3-0 win over Bethany. She posted nine kills, nine digs, and an ace in a sweep over Catholic and finished the day off with nine kills, 11 digs, a block, and an assist in a 3-1 win versus Marymount to clinch the Worthington Classic Championship.


DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mykynli Knight - Southern Virginia

Southern Virginia senior libero Mykynli Knight secured the defense as the Knights stayed perfect on the week with wins over Virginia Wesleyan and Salisbury. Knight totaled 41 digs for 5.13 digs per set. She shined on the back line for Southern Virginia collecting 6.33 digs per set as they swept Salisbury 3-0. She added on offense a pair of kills, four assists and five service aces on the week.

LEAGUE NOTES

Salisbury sophomore Amanda Chew recorded a team-high 11 kills on 43 attacks in a loss to Southern Virginia University on Saturday afternoon. Chew currently leads the conference with 233 total kills and 4.02 kills per set...Senior Hailey Dougherty recorded a team-high 23 digs in a loss to Southern Virginia University on Saturday afternoon. Dougherty currently leads the conference with 300 total digs and 5.17 digs per set...Sammy Carroll continued to excel for Christopher Newport in a 4-0 week as they won the Worthington Classic to extend the winning streak to 10 matches. She was named to the All-Tournament team. For the week, she averaged 11.93 assists per set to go with seven kills, five aces, 23 digs, and seven blocks. In a 3-1 win over CAC rival York on Friday, she handed out 45 assists to go with two aces, eight digs, three blocks, and a kill. She followed later in the day with 33 assists, one kill, two aces, and four digs in a 3-0 win against Bethany. on Saturday, she matched her career-high in assists wth 47 but needed only three sets to get there this time in a 3-0 victory against Catholic. She added two kills, five digs, and two blocks. She rounded out the week in a 3-1 win vs. Marymount in the Worthington Classic Championship with 42 assists, three kills, six digs, an ace, and two blocks (one solo)...Peyton Dunow led Mary Washington past Marymount and St. Mary's this week, hitting .400 with 23 kills and three errors in 50 attempts. She also scored nine digs in each match and posted a pair of block assists against SMC...Kendal Hall turned in a great defensive week for Mary Washington, as the Eagles won a pair of 3-0 scores. She had three aces and eight digs as the Eagles topped Marymount on Wednesday, and added two aces and 14 digs as UMW opened CAC play with a 3-0 win over St. Mary's...York senior Madyson Whitcomb had another big week to lead the Spartans to a 5-1 week and a third place finish at the Peg Worthington Classic in Washington, DC. Whitcomb began the week with 11 kills and a .786 attack percentage in the win over Penn State Berks. She added a service ace, a solo block and a pair of block assists in the victory. She followed that with seven kills, two service aces, three digs, one solo block and one block assist in the win over Penn State Altoona. She had a big match in the CAC opener against CNU as she banged out 13 kills and hit .417 in the loss. She added an assist, four digs and four block assists against the Captains. She followed that with 12 kills, 1 service ace, 1 dig, and five total blocks in the win over Catholic on Friday evening. After just two kills and five attempts in the easy win over Bethany, She ended her week with a season-high 17 kills with an assist, a service ace, two digs and seven blocks in the four set win over Catholic. She finished the week hitting .331 with 62 kills in 127 attempts with two assists, five service aces, 10 digs, and 22 total blocks in 21 sets played. Whitcomb earned All-Tournament team honors for the second straight tournament...Kylee Christensen starred on offense for Southern Virginia against Virginia Wesleyan as she collected a career-high 23 kills and hit .259 for the game as the Knights won in a five-set thriller. She continued her play in the CAC opener with eight kills. She averaged on the week 3.88 kills per set and defensively recorded 35 digs at a 4.38 digs per set clip and six blocks as the Knights remained perfect on the week.
