Marymount Names Zane Castro Cross Country and Triathlon Head Coach

Marymount University has named Marco Zane Castro as the new head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country and triathlon teams, as announced by Director of Athletics Debbie Warren on Wednesday. Castro becomes the inaugural head coach of the newly announced varsity triathlon teams and the third cross country coach in program history.

Mary Washington finished 8th out of 30 teams in the South/Southeast Regional while Salisbury placed 11th out of 56 teams that competed in the Mid-East Regional in NCAA Women's Cross Country action Saturday.

Salisbury won the 2011 CAC Women’s Cross Country title by placing three runners among the top six across the finish line, earning a CAC-best three first-team all-conference nods. The Gulls, second-place Mary Washington and third-place York, which finished within 10 points of each other at the top of the team standings, combined for 10 of the 15 spots on the 2011 All-CAC squad.

Junior Anna Steinman, this week’s INTRODUCING … featured student-athlete, has helped Salisbury win all five team cross country and track & field team championships during her collegiate running career. Traversing the snow-covered course, Steinman placed sixth overall at the 2011 CAC Cross Country championship race, helping the Sea Gulls to their fourth-straight team title. Steinman and her teammates, as well as all the CAC runners and teams, will compete in the NCAA regional championship races this weekend.

The University of Mary Washington and Salisbury University have been the two primary teams battling for the Capital Athletic Conference men’s and women’s team cross country titles for many years. Similarly, the top individuals in the championship races have usually worn UMW or Sea Gulls uniforms. York College, the host of the 2011 CAC Championship Meet on Saturday (10/29), is hoping to lead a pack of challengers to displace the Eagles and Sea Gulls on the awards podium, either individually or collectively.

Kimmie Adams, the CAC’s featured student-athlete for this week’s INTRODUCING … piece, is a senior for the Bobcat women’s cross country team. Adams, the team’s No. 2 runner, is coming off a 27th-place finish at last weekend’s Coach Achtzehn Classic at York (Pa.) College. Adams is also a great student, garnering All-CAC Academic honors last year while majoring in early childhood/elementary education.

So it’s not a stretch to suggest the teams to beat in the title chases on Oct. 29 at York’s John Rudy County Park will be Salisbury, the defending men’s and women’s champion, and Mary Washington.
