Christopher Newport Secures CAC Women’s Cross Country Crown; York’s Delany and Miller Lead Pack

Christopher Newport placed four runners in the top 10 to capture the CAC Women’s Cross Country Championship, while York’s junior duo of Caroline Delany and Jessica Miller finished first and second, respectively, to lead the Spartans to a second-place team mark on Saturday at Winter Place Park in Salisbury, Md.

The Captains totaled 31 points to hand York (41) a second-place team finish for the second straight year. Defending champion Mary Washington took third with 74 points, followed by Marymount (131) and St. Mary’s (146) in the top five.

Delany (22:27.30) edged out Miller (22:30.90) by just over three seconds to claim the individual title, while Christopher Newport sophomore Lydia Cromwell and freshman Briana Stewart posted third and fourth place finishes, respectively, to pace the Captains to the title.

Delany earns CAC Athlete of the Year for her performance, while Stewart claimed Rookie of the Year recognition as the top freshmen.

Freshman Emmie Schmitt and senior Jessica McClelland recorded significant finishes for Christopher Newport, with Schmitt nabbing sixth (22:48.50) and McClelland claiming seventh (22:52.30). Sophomore Alexa Tabackman secured 11th to round out the Captains’ scoring.

Along with Delany and Miller, York was paced by Jenna Roberts in ninth, Alicia Dillman in 14th and Kathleen Cannon in 15th.

A pair of Mary Washington runners landed in the top 10, with junior Tara Landy claiming eighth and sophomore Lauren Braney securing 10th.

Marymount freshman Melissa Teeple finished fifth with a time of 22:45.30, while freshman Elizabeth Long grabbed 12th to help the Saints take fourth in the team standings.

Wesley freshman Dieunise Desir posted a top-16 finish to claim All-CAC honors in her first championship meet.

Southern Virginia, a provisional NCAA Division III member, also competed in the CAC Championships but was ineligible to record a team score as a provisional member. The Knights become eligible for CAC postseason competition in 2014-15.
