York Women's Cross Country Captures First-Ever CAC Title

The York women's cross country team placed four runners in the top seven on its way to the program's first-ever CAC Championship on Saturday in Hershey, Pa. The Spartans totaled 31 points to narrowly defeat second-place Christopher Newport by two points, ending the Captains three-year streak atop the conference. 

Salisbury finished third with 67 points, followed by Mary Washington (130) and Marymount (171) in the top five. Wesley took sixth place with 188, while St. Mary's (194), Frostburg State (196), and Penn State Harrisburg rounded out the team scores. 

CNU senior Emmie Schmitt captured the individual title in 23:38.8 to claim Athlete of the Year honors, edging freshman teammate Jessica Lee by five seconds. Lee earned Rookie of the Year as the top newcomer. 

York secured the team title on the strength of a all-around team effort, headlined by senior Kathleen Cannon's third-place finish. Sophomores Alayna DeBruin and Jessica DelViscio and freshman Stephanie Savage placed fifth through seventh, respectively, earning first team All-CAC nods. Freshman Kristi Wandzilak and senior Alicia Dillman took 10th and 11th to secure second team all-conference recogntion. 

Along with Schmitt and Lee at the top, seniors Logan Harrington (eighth) and Briana Stewart (ninth) grabbed top-10 placings, while sophomore Abigail May (13th) and freshman Gena Lewis (14th) secured All-CAC second team honors. 

Third-place Salisbury had four runners in the top-16, led by junior Alison Schwartz in fourth place. Sophomore Jamie Farley took 12th while freshman Abby Potter and sophomore Jill Ciritella finished 15th and 16, respectively, for the Sea Gulls.
