COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Adding another honor to her award-winning haul, junior goalie
Lily Kerr was named the NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week after guiding the Christopher Newport field hockey team to three straight shutouts during a remarkable six-day stretch.
Along with the national honor, Kerr was named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
With her NFHCA award, the Edgewater, Maryland native became the first Captain to receive the prestigious recognition on two separate occasions and just the 11th player to pick up a pair in Division III history. She was previously named the National Defensive Player of the Week as a freshman on October 19, 2022.
In addition to Kerr's historic haul, Christopher Newport carved out its own spot in the record books on Wednesday. The Captains became the first Division III program in NCAA history to have a pair of teammates earn the National Defensive Player of the Week honor during the same fall campaign. Two weeks ago,
Brooke Billhimer received the award on October 16.
In fact, the CNU standouts became just the 17th set of teammates from any level of the NCAA to receive the recognition in the same year. In that exclusive club, they joined a litany of legendary duos, including famed Syracuse stars Syd Taylor and Eefke van den Niewenhof, who were both celebrated during the 2020 season. Incidentally, during their award-winning stretch with the Orange that year, Taylor and van den Niewenhof were aided on the back end by current CNU assistant coach and All-American defender
Alex Morales.
Earning the national award with a record-setting showcase last week, Kerr saw 173 minutes of action while registering 17 saves, three victories, and a pair of 60-minute shutouts. During the week, Christopher Newport outscored its opposition, 10-0, while extending the program's winning streak to four straight games.
Kicking off the week in style, Kerr pieced together one of the finest individual efforts in program history during a 4-0 victory over Rhodes in Salem, Virginia on Monday. Against the Lynx, she registered nine saves in the third quarter, including six during a minute-long barrage that saw her dive from post to post to keep the cage clean. Her nine saves during the period marked the most by a Captain in a single stanza in program history.
Three days later, Kerr continued her week with four saves during 53 minutes of spotless action in a 5-0 triumph at St. Mary's (Md.). Once again, she flashed her athleticism with a pair of sprawling stops during a second-quarter surge by the Seahawks.
On Saturday, Kerr polished off the week with four more saves during a 1-0 win at Washington and Lee. Among her highlights against the Generals, she hit the turf for a lunging save in the second quarter before walling off a breakaway in the final moments of the first half. With that performance, she became the first goalie to shut out Washington and Lee at the W&L Turf Field since 2019. The program had scored in 43 straight home games before Kerr's weekend masterpiece.
Kerr's work against Washington and Lee also marked her 16th career shutout, moving her one away from matching the all-time program record set by All-American Bailey Lien from 2013-16.
So far this season, Kerr ranks third in the country in save percentage (.862) and fifth in goals-against-average (0.62). Meanwhile, her .853 career save percentage is the highest mark of any active goalie in the entire NCAA.
A reigning second-team All-American, she is also a two-time first-team All-Conference and All-State selection.
Kerr and the rest of her teammates will return to action on Saturday when Christopher Newport punctuates the regular season with a 4 p.m. battle against Mary Washington at Jennings Family Stadium.
