No. 1 Field Hockey flattens No. 13 Lynchburg, 3-0, in NCAA second round

Sea Gulls advance to third straight national quarterfinals

SALISBURY, Md. – The top-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team easily handled its first steps into the big dance, bouncing the 13th-ranked Lynchburg Hornets, 3-0, in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.

The Sea Gulls advance to Sunday's national quarterfinals to face the winner of Saturday's second-round matchup between sixth-ranked Christopher Newport and 10th-ranked York (Pa.). Opening pushback of Sunday's third-round showdown will be 1 p.m.

After dominating shots and time of possession in the first quarter, the Sea Gulls finally broke through off a penalty corner in the 14th minute. An initial shot by Arden Hunteman was turned away by a defensive save, then Madelyn Reed took the rebound and slapped it toward the cage, and Alex Kupper was there to deflect it in to put Salisbury on top 1-0.

SU doubled its lead in the first minute of the second quarter. Hunteman took a loose ball and charged in on the right seam, unleashing a hot strike into the far corner of the cage to make it 2-0.

The Sea Gulls controlled the tempo through the bulk of the third and fourth quarters and added one final nail to the coffin in the 59th minute. On a penalty corner, Reed fed Marli McDorman, who launched a rocket from the right side to give SU its final 3-0 winning margin.
