Captains Open NCAA Play With 101-75 Victory over John Jay; CNU Hosts Roanoke Saturday NIght at 6:30 PM

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University recorded its highest point total of the season Friday night in a 101-75 victory over John Jay College at the Freeman Center. The victory in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament means the Captains will take on the Maroons of Roanoke College Saturday night in the second round, with tip off set for 6:30 p.m. Roanoke won over Pfeiffer University, 71-70, in the first game Friday at the Freeman Center.

Sophomore Toa Hollenbeck posted a career-high 30 points, making seven-of-nine three point attempts, and fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines registered his fifth double-double of the year with 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead CNU. The Captains are now 23-5, and will play a Roanoke squad that erased an 18-point second half deficit to pull out the victory over Pfeiffer and improve to 24-5.

The Captains, appearing in their ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament, led by just four at the intermission, 48-44, before blowing the game open in the second half. CNU out-scored John Jay, 53-31, in the second half en route to the 26-point triumph. The 101-point effort marks the most points ever scored in an NCAA game by CNU.

The first half featured a back-and-forth battle that saw the lead change hands eight times. The Bloodhounds held a six-point edge, 35-29, with 7:07 to play in the first half, only to fall behind by the intermission thanks to a 19-9 CNU run. Christopher Newport then used a 21-9 run early in the second half to break the game open, and eventually raced to a 27-point lead in the game's final minutes.

Hollenbeck ended the night 11-of-17 from the field, including a perfect second half six-for-six, with four coming from long range. Jahn Hines made ten-of-19 shots, and also dished out five assists and made three steals in addition to his 26 points and 12 boards. Jahn Hines has now scored 2,054 career points, second-most in CNU history behind Lamont Strothers' 2,709 from 1987-1991.

John Jay finished the season with a 19-9 record, and was held to 31 percent shooting (11-of-35) in the second half, while the Captains scorched the nets with 60 percent shooting (22 of 37) after halftime. CNU made 13-of-27 from three-point range (48 percent), including nine-of-15 (60 percent) in the second stanza. Overall, Christopher Newport shot 51 percent from the field (40-of-78) for the night.

John Krikorian's squad out-rebounded John Jay, 50-39, and the Captains turned the ball over just nine times for the night. Keyshawn Miller led the John Jay attack with 21 points, and Jamir Stewart (16) and Jordan Evelyn (14) also reached double figures. The game was the first-ever of the two programs in men's basketball.

The Captains are now 13-1 at the Freeman Center this season, and 13-3 all-time in NCAA games at the Freeman Center heading into Saturday night's game with Roanoke. The game will be the eighth all-time meeting of the programs, with the Captains holding a 4-3 lead in the all-time series.
