The No. 1 University of Mary Washington men's soccer team advanced to the second round in the NCAA Tournament with a 3-1 win over William Peace on Saturday afternoon, setting up a matchup with Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the NCAA second round.
The Eagles got off to a quick start with
Julian Schmugge's header in the sixth minute that found the back of the goal to put them up 1-0 --
Sammy Amorose recorded the assist.
Then, just 15 minutes later, Amorose scored a goal of his own as
Carter Berg roped a pass from the right side to the left side of the box, that Amorose finished off for his 13th goal of the season that put UMW up by two goals, 2-0.
At the half, UMW led by a pair and was outshooting William Peace by five, 11-6, with four shots on net. The Eagles, too, led in corner kicks, 5-3.
And in the second half, Mary Washington added on a second goal for good measure as
Diego Guzman scored on a free kick from about 25 yards away, beating all nine defenders that the Pacers had stacked in the box.
William Peace added a goal in the 71st minute, but by that point, it was too late as UMW cruised to a 3-1 victory.
Senior keeper
Freddy Rogers recorded his 18th victory of the season to run his season record to 18-1-2 as he saved four shots on eight total.
All told, UMW shot the ball 19 times -- seven of which were on goal -- and led in corner kicks, 9-6.
The Eagles are back in action against Ohio Wesleyan, who took down Catholic, on Sunday afternoon. First touch is set for 1 p.m.
