Daulton Teaford Named Track & Field and Cross Country Head Coach for Sprints, Hurdles, and Jumps

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Daulton Teaford has been named head coach of the Christopher Newport track & field and cross country program overseeing sprints, hurdles, and jumps. The former All-American returns to his alma mater after gaining experience as a coach and sports performance professional at both the collegiate and international levels.

After serving as an assistant coach with the Captains between 2015 and 2020, Teaford returns to Newport News and reunites with a familiar staff. He joins Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Tyler Wingard, who will continue in his position as Christopher Newport's head cross country/distance coach in addition to his work with the track & field team's multi-event group. Meanwhile, assistant coach Taylor Frenia has served as the full-time throws coach since 2017.

"I am incredibly excited to be back at Christopher Newport!" said Teaford. "CNU has played a large role in my development both personally and professionally. The opportunity to be a part of the school and the track & field program once again is something I couldn't pass up. Coach Wingard has had no small part to play in my becoming a coach. I'm thrilled at the chance to help the next generation of Captains grow and reach their potential the way he has helped me."

Teaford returns to an award-winning track & field program that captured three league titles and produced a pair of All-Americans during the 2022-23 campaign. One of the most successful programs in NCAA history, Christopher Newport has won 12 team national championships and 66 individual titles while collecting 526 total All-American certificates.

"I am really excited to have Coach Teaford back on our staff in this expanded role," said Wingard. "He has an intimate knowledge of our program, department, and university as an alum and long-time assistant coach. His additional experience working in sports performance here, overseas, and at the University of Vermont along with his internship and ongoing connection with ALTIS are tremendous assets, and he will bring that expertise to all of our event groups."

Teaford returns to Christopher Newport after beginning his coaching career with the Captains nearly eight years ago. Starting in the fall of 2015, he spent two separate stints working with the sprinters in Newport News while also serving as an assistant in the strength & conditioning department. During his initial tenure with the program, he helped the track & field teams claim 10 league championships while serving as a member of the 2020 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Coaching Staff of the Year.

In addition to his early years with the Captains, Teaford also spent time in 2018 completing a prestigious internship with ALTIS, a world-renowned organization focused on elite training and sports performance.

After leaving Newport News in 2020, Teaford was the head track & field coach for two years at Corvuss American Academy in India. During his time at the international boarding school, he also worked as the strength & conditioning coach.

Since returning to the United States in the summer of 2022, Teaford has been an assistant sports performance coach at the University of Vermont. With the Catamounts, he was responsible for designing and implementing training programs for the track & field teams as well as women's soccer and swimming & diving.

Along with his professional endeavors, Teaford was a decorated sprinter during his time at Christopher Newport. In his four years with the Captains, he earned two All-American citations and won five conference titles. He was also a three-time national qualifier, including a pair of bids in the outdoor 200.

Making his mark on the national stage, Teaford placed fourth at the 2015 NCAA Championships in the 200 after coming in fifth in the event two years earlier. He set a PR of 21.26 during the 2013 nationals, which still ranks as the third-fastest clocking in program history. Additionally, he remains in the school's top-10 all-time in the indoor 60, 200, 400, and heptathlon as well as the outdoor 100 and 400.

Teaford graduated from Christopher Newport with a degree in organismal biology in 2015. He later spent a year volunteering with the Peace Corps in Malawi, Africa.

"Coach Teaford will take over training design and implementation for the Sprints-Hurdles-Jumps group, continuing to evolve and enhance our core principles and philosophies," said Wingard. "He will also play an integral role in our injury management and joint/tissue resilience strategies throughout the program."
