Southern Virginia's Garrish Sweeps CAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year Awards
CAC - Southern Virginia junior Katie Garrish garnered top conference honors as both the CAC Player of the Year and the inaugural CAC Defensive Player of the Year to highlight the 2020 All-CAC Women's Basketball Team. Christopher Newport's Anaya Simmons collected CAC Rookie of the Year honors, York's Molly Day earned CAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, while York's Betsy Witman and her staff were selected "Bill Finney" CAC Coaching Staff of the Year for the fifth time after a 6-4 league record and 15-10 overall mark.
Garrish, who becomes the fifth player in CAC history to earn the Player of the Year award in back-to-back seasons, led the league averaging 16.6 points and 11.3 rebounds and 3.3 blocks in the regular season to lead SVU to a 16-8 overall league record.
Simmons led the way for the youthful Captains as she averaged a league-best 55.6 percent field goal shooting to go with 10.2 points per game. This marks the second consecutive year CNU has collected the Rookie of the Year award after Sondra Fan, a first teamer this season, earned the honor last year.
Day, who also was named to the second team, earned the inaugural CAC Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year following an impressive showing this season as one of the top post players in the league. Day, who also shines in the classroom as an education major, averaged 11.4 points and 6.2 rebounds to also collect second team all-conference accolades.
Mary Washington and York led the way with three all-conference seletions, while Southern Virginia posted a pair of first teamers. The 2020 CAC regular season champions Christopher Newport also earned a pair of all-conference honorees to go with their Rookie of the Year award. The all-conference teams are listed below:
