SPARKS, Md. -- After starring for the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team throughout the spring season,
Kate Lamendola and
Brookelyn Morrison were named honorable mention All-Americans by
USA Lacrosse Magazine on Wednesday afternoon.
Morrison secured the publication's highest honor for the second straight season, placing her alongside former legend
Kelsey Winters as the only multi-time recipients in program history. Meanwhile, Lamendola earned the national recognition for the first time in her career.
Overall, it marked the fifth straight season in which the Captains produced at least one All-American and the fourth straight year with multiple honorees.
Solidifying her spot on the midfield unit, Lamendola flashed her versatility while shining on both ends of the field during her second year in Newport News. On the defensive side, she pocketed 30 caused turnovers, which equaled the seventh-most in program history and the second-highest total by a sophomore. She had multiple takeaways in eight of her appearances and was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week on February 17 after posting six strips in the opener at Lynchburg.
Just as effective on the offensive end, Lamendola sank 28 goals during the year while finishing with 35 total points. Consistently effective, she notched at least one point in 17 of her 19 outings, including eight multi-goal efforts. Stepping up against top-flight competition, she landed two strikes in top-20 clashes against No. 4 Gettysburg, No. 5 Salisbury, and No. 17 Roanoke during the regular season.
Making her presence felt all over the field, Morrison pieced together an equally well-rounded campaign. In the center of the turf, she helped control possession while hauling in 98 draw controls, which ranked second in the league and marked the fourth-highest total in program history. She secured at least five draws in 10 of her appearances, including a season-high 14 at No. 17 Roanoke. That effort tied the single-game school record and earned her the league's Defensive Player of the Week honor on April 7.
Scattering her name throughout the record books, Morrison also notched 43 caused turnovers, which marked the second-highest total in school history. Her eight man-up goals also established a new program standard. She registered at least one takeaway in all 19 games, including two or more on 13 occasions. She also finished with 47 points on the offensive side, including nine against Mary Washington in the league semifinals on April 30.
Aided by the efforts of the All-Americans, Christopher Newport climbed as high as 15th in the IWLCA National Coaches Poll and advanced to the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship for the fifth straight season.
