Captains Win Three Straight Sets to Advance to Regional Semifinal

BALTIMORE, Md. - Christopher Newport rallied from an opening set loss to win three straight sets and take down Ramapo in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

First Set (Ramapo 33-31)

A block from Macy Burk kept Ramapo from scoring a clinching point late in the first set. In the extended set, Samantha Dorn hit two kills and Sammy Carroll and Megan James each hit one as both sides crossed 30 points. Ramapo managed to score three in a row to win the first set.

Second Set (Captains 25-20)

Sammy Carroll served three aces in a row as part of a six-point run for CNU to give them a six point lead. Megan James' kill stopped a potential Ramapo run and gave CNU the 23-20 advantage late in the second set, and Macy Burk blocked the next two attacks with help from Carroll and Samantha Dorn to win the set for the Captains and tie the match at one.

Third Set (Captains 25-14)

Like Carroll in the second set, Megan James served three straight aces in the third set and put CNU ahead 11-5. The Captains hit over .300 in both the second and third sets. With a 21-13 lead, kills from Macy Burk and Samantha Dorn helped CNU take four of the final five points to win their second straight set.

Fourth Set (Captains 25-23)

Ramapo jumped out to a 8-1 lead and led for most of the fourth set. The Captains chipped away and after kills from Macy Burk and Alyssa Dozier, Angie Barrera's service ace finally put CNU ahead 22-21. Back-to-back aces from Sammy Carroll gave CNU the final two points they needed to win and advance to the next round.
