NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport volleyball team opened the NCAA Tournament with a four-set victory over William Paterson on Thursday night at the Freeman Center. The Captains advance to the Regional Semifinal for the third consecutive year after the 3-1 win.
First Set
The Captains opened the match strong, scoring the first three points with kills from
Alyssa Dozier and
Megan James, and an ace by
Alyssa Vitale. However, William Paterson responded with a run of their own, building a 12-6 lead. CNU battled back, sparked by back-to-back Dozier kills, taking an 18-17 lead. Despite a late push by the Captains with kills from
Samantha Dorn and
Macy Burk, the Pioneers held on to win the set.
Second Set
CNU rebounded with a dominant start in the second set, jumping out to a 7-2 lead fueled by three kills from Dozier. The Captains extended their lead with aces by
Phoebe Adams and Burk, as well as two blocks by Dozier, eventually leading 22-11. Although the Pioneers staged a late rally, the Captains closed out the set comfortably, 25-19.
Third Set
The Captains carried their momentum into the third set, storming to a commanding 12-2 advantage. Dozier recorded two blocks during the run, while Dorn contributed two kills. Dozier dominated with seven kills in the set, and kills from Burk and Dorn helped the Captains cruise to a 25-13 victory, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
Fourth Set
Dozier set the tone for the final set with back-to-back kills, finishing with seven in the set. Leading 12-7, CNU strung together seven consecutive points, including kills from Burk,
Alli Pratt, and James. William Paterson fought back to cut the deficit to one, but the Captains held their ground. Pratt delivered a key kill to bring up match point, and James sealed the win with a match-clinching kill.
