Captains Down No. 8 East Texas Baptist to Reach Regional Final

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport volleyball team took down No. 8 East Texas Baptist in a four-set victory on Friday night at the Freeman Center. The Captains advance to the NCAA Regional Final for the second time in three seasons behind a record-setting performance from Alyssa Dozier.

First Set

East Texas Baptist came out strong, building a 7-1 lead. Christopher Newport responded with a four-point run, including an ace from Noelle Starr, to cut into the deficit. Down 20-16 later in the set, the Captains mounted another comeback, sparked by a Phoebe Adams kill and a Macy Burk block to tie the score at 20. Trailing 23-21, CNU finished the set with four consecutive points, highlighted by a Megan James kill, an Alyssa Vitale ace, and both a block and kill from Dozier to secure the opening frame, 25-23.

Second Set

The Captains dominated the second set, racing out to a commanding 15-3 lead. Dozier was unstoppable early, contributing four consecutive points with two blocks and two kills to start the set. She added a third block and two more kills during the run, while Kensie Price served an ace. Dozier's dominance continued as CNU built a 23-12 advantage, and the set ended with a Samantha Dorn kill and another Price ace.

Third Set

Despite early kills from Dozier and another Price ace, the Tigers surged ahead to a 13-10 lead to start the third set. The Captains responded by winning five of the next six points, including kills from Dorn and Dozier, but ETBU countered with a four-point run of their own. Despite a late push by the Captains, the Tigers held on to win the third set, 25-22.

Fourth Set

ETBU carried their momentum into the fourth set, taking an 11-7 lead. However, CNU turned the tide with an eight-point surge, fueled by three blocks from Carley Coghill and a block and kill from Dozier. The Tigers regained control with a 7-1 run to lead 22-18, but the Captains fought back with kills from Dorn and Burk and an Adams ace to narrow the deficit. Facing set point at 24-22, CNU rallied with a James kill, a Dozier block, and a decisive Dozier kill to take a 25-24 lead. After ETBU brought up set point again, Dozier closed out the match with another block and back-to-back kills to secure the 27-25 victory.
