AUSTIN, Texas -- Adding another historical individual accolade to her growing list of accomplishments, Christopher Newport University junior
Alyssa Dozier was named a first team Academic All-American by the College Sports Communicators on Tuesday afternoon. With her selection, Dozier becomes just the second student-athlete in any sport at CNU to garner first team honors more than once in her career, joining women's soccer standout Carson Pokorny.
Coupled with her first team citation last year, Dozier joins Pokorny as the only two-time first team Academic All-Americans in CNU Athletics history and is the eighth student-athlete to garner multiple certificates of any level. She joins field hockey record-setter Abby Asuncion, women's soccer standouts Hanna Heaton and Pokorny along with men's lacrosse legend Dylan Rice and track & field stars Casey Taylor, Zoe Stauffer, and Adrianna DeSantis.
The College Sports Communicators, formerly known as CoSIDA - the College Sports Information Directors, announced the 2024 Academic All-Americans on Tuesday afternoon. The award is considered the most prestigious academic honor in college athletics and Dozier is one of only 22 repeat selections at all four levels recognized by the organization (NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA). Among Division III recipients, she is one of just three players to garner back-to-back first team Academic All-America plaudits.
This fall, Dozier, a middle blocker from Arlington, Va., put together a dominant 2024 campaign to earn third team All-America honors by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). It was her second career All-American certificate after earning second team plaudits as a sophomore and she also earned Conference Player of the Year honors for the second straight season. She helped lead Christopher Newport back into the national rankings as the Captains concluded the year ranked No. 21 in the AVCA Division III Coaches' Poll after lifting CNU into the NCAA Newport News Regional Championship Game.
Dozier was one of the most formidable front-line defenders in the country, ranking 21st nationally in blocks per set (1.15) and fourth in Division III total blocks with 147. That total was enough to tie Chastity Lacy (2013) for third on the all-time single season charts at Christopher Newport and fell just three terminations shy of the program record set by Hall of Famer Bailey Jensen in 2011. Adding to her previous total, Dozier moved up to sixth all-time in total blocks with 361 after her third year and also ranks tied for third all-time in solo blocks with 104.
Additionally, her 488 points were a top-ten mark all-time at CNU and set a personal best at the conclusion of her junior season. She set career-highs with 386 kills and 65 digs while hitting at a .313 clip for the season. She led the league in kills, blocks, and points and added a number of standout single game performances as well. Most notably, Dozier set a program postseason record by hitting .625 in the opening round of the NCAA Regional Championship against William Paterson. She buried 15 kills without a single error on 24 swings to help Christopher Newport advance to the second round against nationally-ranked East Texas Baptist. Outdoing herself, she added another program record with 21 kills against the Tigers in the regional semifinals while adding a career-high 11 blocks in the same match.
Off the court, Dozier continues to carry a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA while majoring in History. She was one of only two first team Academic All-Americans with an unblemished mark in the classroom, joining East Texas Baptist junior Graycee Mosley, and headlines a group of four Division III selections to earn a 4.0 GPA among the 21 honored student-athletes.
With Dozier leading the way, the Captains concluded the season with a record of 26-10 while finishing with the highest national ranking since 2015 at No. 21 in the nation. The team conquered some of the best programs in the nation along the way while facing a top-ten schedule including wins against No. 17 Calvin, No. 14 Washington and Lee, No. 25 Salisbury, and No. 8 East Texas Baptist. CNU won the C2C Championship and advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals for the third time in the last ten seasons.
