Christopher Newport Junior Brandon Ginch and York Senior Elliot Mortimer Honored as CAC Baseball Players of the Week

YORK, Pa. -- Christopher Newport junior Brandon Ginch and York senior Elliot Mortimer were named the CAC Baseball Players of the Week for March 6, 2017.

Christopher Newport junior Brandon Ginch was named the CAC Player of the Week after hitting for the cycle against Eastern Mennonite, driving in a run in all five games, and slugging .944 in a 3-2 week for the Captains. Against Eastern Mennonite, Ginch hit for CNU's first cycle since 2002 and only the third in program history. In his cycle against the Royals, he drove in five runs and scored three times, and wrapped up the cycle by the sixth inning, completing it in his first and only four at-bats. For the week, he hit .444 with 11 RBIs, two home runs, and scored six times.

York senior Elliot Mortimer nabbed CAC Pitcher of the Week accolades after tossing seven shutout innings while allowing just one hit in a win over Johnson & Wales last Monday. Mortimer struck out 10 and walked two in his seven innings of work. He did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the top of the seventh inning in the victory.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

All 10 CAC squads have now opened up the 2017 season ... Salisbury and Frostburg State are receiving votes in the D3baseball.com poll ... Frostburg State went 1-1 last week with a 6-4 win over Scranton and a 6-3 loss to No. 2 Cortland State. Junior Matt Bougourd totaled three RBI, with two hits and a walk in two games over the weekend ... Mary Washington junior Bryant White gained the win over Messiah in game one of their Saturday doubleheader, giving the Falcons their first loss of the season in a 5-4 extra inning win. White allowed one hit in 3.2 innings, walking none and striking out seven of the 12 batters he faced ... Marymount senior Roy Coates hit .667 last week with five RBIs, five runs scored and a stolen base in a 2-2 week for the Saints. Freshman pitcher Kenny Sysyn earned his first collegiate win with a six-inning outing against Husson, allowing just one earned run and striking out two ... St. Mary's freshman Zach Thompson recorded a season-best 11 strikeouts in a 4-1 non-conference win over Gettysburg on Sunday. Thompson scattered seven hits in 8.1 innings, allowing just an unearned run with one walk ... Salisbury went 4-0 last week with wins over Washington College, Franklin & Marshall, and Dickinson. Senior Tom LaBriola hit .400 with seven RBIs, and five runs scored. LaBriola's bases-clearing doubles against F&M helped blow the game open in a 10-0 win. Senior pitcher Jeff Oster earned his first win of the season against Dickinson on Sunday, striking out 10 of 28 batters and  ... Wesley went 2-1 last week in a three-game series with St. Joseph's (Brkln). Chris Seibert hit .545 in the three games with three doubles and six RBIs, including a two-run, walk-off double in the finale of the three-game series ... York junior Collin Crowell led the Spartans to a 4-2 week in Myrtle Beach, hitting .393 with nine runs scored, three doubles, two RBIs, and a pair of stolen bases for the Green and White.
