Christopher Newport Senior Sammy Blosser and Wesley Freshman Kyle Springsteen Nab CAC Men's Soccer Weekly Honors

YORK, Pa. -- Christopher Newport senior Sammy Blosser and Wesley freshman Kyle Springsteen were named the CAC Men's Soccer Players of the Week for Sept. 6, 2016.

Christopher Newport senior defender Sammy Blosser was honored as the CAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a goal and tallying three assists in a pair of CNU wins at the season-opening Joe Pombriant / CNU Soccer Classic. Against Greensboro, Blosser assisted on Jordan Boone's goal in the first half before depositing his own second half goal on a corner kick. He also had a dynamite performance against Allegheny off set pieces, assisting on the gamewinner by Patrick Burns with a perfectly lofted ball into the box in the first half, and adding a helper in the second half with a long free kick from just inside midfield. He leads the team in scoring through two games with five points. 

Defensive Player of the Week

Wesley freshman goalkeeper Kyle Springsteen was picked as the CAC Defensive Player of the Week after totaling nine saves and allowing just two goals in a 1-0-2 opening week for the Wolverines. Springsteen helped the Wolverines to a 2-1 win over McDaniel in the opener, making four saves including a penalty kick stop in the 77th minute to keep the game level. Against Eastern Mennonite, he produced his first collegiate shutout, making two saves including another saved penalty. He made three saves against Bridgewater, keeping the Wolverines level for 110 minutes. For the week, he posted a .818 save percentage and 0.58 goals against average in 312:18 minutes of action.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

CAC men's soccer teams kicked off the 2016 campaign in impressive fashion this past weekend, boasting a 13-5-3 overall record from Thursday-Sunday. Leading the way were Christopher Newport, Mary Washington, and York, as each posted 2-0 records. Salisbury went 1-0, and St. Mary's was also unbeaten at 1-0-1 ... Frostburg State's Josh Mcrobie posted a hat trick in his second collegiate game as the Bobcats earned a 5-0 victory over Saint Vincent. Frostburg State fell in its opener, 1-0 to Catholic ... Mary Washington opened the season with a 3-2 double overtime win against Averett and then topped Stockton, 4-1, to open the season with a 2-0 mark. Sophomore Jack Saslowsky scored goals in each of UMW's season-opening wins, including the game-winning tally midway through the second overtime in a 3-2 triumph over Averett, 3-2 ... Penn State Harrisburg's Mitchell Saye tallied a hat trick against Villa Maria, helping the Lions to an 8-0 win on Sunday. The Lions are 2-1 on the year with wins over D'Youville and Villa Maria and a defeat to Hampden Sydney ... St. Mary's Nick Tait jumped up two spots to eighth all-time with 67 career points following a five-point performance in the first two games of the season, surpassing David Reumont '07 (62 points) and Mikel Tigrett '08 (64 points). Tait started off the week with the game-winning goal and an assist at Penn State Abington and followed that up with a goal vs. Rutgers-Camden, who received votes in the NSCAA preseason poll, at Salisbury's Elmer Lord Memorial Classic ... Salisbury's Leslie Umunna scored twice in an 8-0 win over Wilson ... Southern Virginia's Brandon Zapata found the back of the net on both of the Knights penalty kicks of a 2-1 win over William Peace. The Knights are 1-1 on the year with a 2-0 loss to Eastern Mennonite in the their opener ... York junior defender Ryan Ockford led the Spartans to victories over Randolph (3-1) and Alvernia (4-1) last week. Ockford tallied a pair of goals against Randolph and scored once in vs. Alvernia. Ockford's three goals doubles his career total and matches his best single season output (2014). Both of his goals for the week were game-winners for the Spartans.
