Mary Washington Wins 8 Of 10 Events To Gain First Day Leads At 2010 CAC Swimming Championships

The University of Mary Washington collected first-place points in eight of 10 events, including four women's races and four men's races, to jump into the early lead after the first day of competition at the 2010 CAC Swimming Championships.

In the women's team standings after Friday's five events, Mary Washington tallied 288 points for a comfortable lead over second-place Marymount (158) and host St. Mary's (151).  Rounding out the women's team standings are York (98), Salisbury (94), Gallaudet (56) and Hood (48).

UMW is also in front in the men's standings with 263 points while York has a firm grip on second place with 179 points.  St. Mary's (120) has a slight edge on the rest of the pack, followed by Marymount (100), Salisbury (85), Gallaudet (64) and Hood (58).

Friday's competition started later than usual as the morning trials were cancelled because of the midweek snowstorm that crippled parts of the Middle Atlantic Region.  Instead, the three individual events were held as "timed finals" during Friday's evening session, which started two hours earlier than normal.

Mary Washington's squad wasted no time in taking the lead, capturing top honors in both the men's (1:25.89) and women's (1:37.12) 200 freestyle relay.

Junior Sarah Crockett (5:02.11, NCAA "B" cut) then led UMW's domination of the women's 500 freestyle as the Eagles swept the top three places and seven of the top nine spots.  The Eagles scored 99 out of 155 possible points.

The UMW men topped that performance, sweeping the top six places in the 500 freestyle, led by freshman gold medalist Nick Eckhoff (4:38.88, NCAA "B" cut).  The Eagles scored 102 points in this race.

St. Mary's freshman Kelly Heyde broke UMW's run by capturing top honors in the women's 200 individual medley in 2:08.14.  Heyde, along with UMW's Nina Sawyer (2:08.28) and Megan DeSmit (2:08.63), all recorded NCAA "B" cuts in the race.

UMW senior Justin Anderson got the Eagles back on top, leading a 1-2-3 sweep of the men's 200 IM (1:59.26) along with Peter Slattery (1:59.73) and Andrew Cole (2:00.34).

Mary Washington junior Adrianna Lesiuk (23.93) edged Marymount sophomore Anna Macedonia (24.08) for gold medal honors in the women's 50 freestyle.  Both performances were faster than the previous CAC Championship Meet record, set in 2007 by Mary Washington's Maureen Greenlee.

In the men's 50 freestyle, Mary Washington sophomores Austin Clark (21.61) and Brian O'Donnell (21.66) edged out St. Mary's junior Jackson Webb (21.88) for a 1-2 sweep in the closest finish of the night.

Mary Washington's 400 medley relay team finished the women's competition for the evening with a conference record-setting performance, touching the wall in 3:52.59.  In the men's 400 medley relay, York College gained its first gold medal performance of the weekend, posting a time of 3:37.60.

The meet returns to its normal two sessions per day schedule Saturday, with trials in the morning (10 a.m.) and the finals in seven events in the evening session, beginning at 6 p.m.
