Mary Washington Sweeps Team Titles Again At CAC Swimming Championships; Women Win 20th-Straight, Men Capture 10th

The University of Mary Washington's swimming performance at the CAC Championships was appropriate for the year 2010.  The Eagles women won their 20th-straight title and the men's team captured it's 10th-straight crown ... 20-10!

The UMW women's team extended their dominance of CAC women's swimming, winning every title since the inception of the conference in 1991.  The Eagles scored 926.5 points to outdistance host SMC (628.5) for the crown.  Marymount (470) took third place, followed by York (415), Salisbury (362), Gallaudet (151) and Hood (129).

On the men's side, Mary Washington captured the crown for the 10th-straight year by scoring 984 points.  York captured second place with 664, and the host Seahawks (390) edged Salisbury (389) for third place.  Marymount placed fifth with 293, followed by Gallaudet (169) and Hood (166).

UMW coach Matt Sellman walked out of the championship, hosted by St. Mary's College (Md.), with the most hardware.  In addition to two team trophies, Sellman was picked by his peers as both the men's and women's Coach of the Year.  It's his second-straight men's Coach of the Year Award and first for the Women's Coach of the Year.

He is the third CAC swim coach to win both Coach of the Year awards in the same season.  UMW's Paul Richards did it twice (1991 and 1992) while UMW's Matt Kinney did it three times (1996-98).

A pair of UMW juniors also swept the Swimmer of the Year awards.

Sarah Crockett, who won the 500 freestyle Friday, 200 freestyle Saturday and 1,650 freestyle Sunday, was named the Women's Swimmer of the Year.  Crockett previously won the 2008 CAC Women's Rookie of the Year Award.

In the men's competition, Stephen Clendenin took the trophy stand for the third-straight year.  After winning the 2008 CAC Men's Rookie of the Year, Clendenin has now been selected as the Men's Swimmer of the Year each of the past two years.

Another Eagle standout, freshman Nick Eckhoff was named the Men's Rookie of the Year.  He is the eighth UMW swimmer to win the Men's Rookie of the Year award since its inception in 1997.

The Women's Rookie of the Year award went to St. Mary's freshman Kelly Heyde.  She joins former Seahawk standouts Sasha Bishton (1998) and Jody Costa (1999) as SMCM Rookie of the Year award winners and snapped a six-year run of Mary Washington swimmers to win the award.

Crockett's win in the 1,650, in a CAC-record time of 17:38.99 (NCAA "B" cut) started a run of nine gold medals for UMW swimmers in 12 events during Sunday's final night of competition.

The UMW women also touched the wall first by junior Adrianna Lesiuk in the 100 freestyle (52.23, tied CAC record and NCAA "B" cut), sophomore Megan DeSmit in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.74, CAC record and NCAA "B" cut) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:31.42, CAC and Championship records; NCAA "B" cut).

On the men's side, UMW picked up first-place finishes Sunday by junior Brad Dunn in the 1,650 freestyle (16:43.76), Clendenin in the 200 backstroke (1:52.39, CAC and Championsihp Meet record, NCAA "B" cut) and 200 butterfly (1:53.37, NCAA "B" cut), sophomore Brian O'Donnell in the 100 freestyle (47.41) and the 400 freestyle relay team (3:08.20).

Sunday's other individual golds were secured by York sophomore Heather MacLennan in the women's 200 backstroke (2:07.37, NCAA "B" cut), St. Mary's freshman Evan Wollman in the men's 200 breaststroke (2:11.75) and Heyde in the women's 200 butterfly (2:09.39).
