UMW Soph. Stephen Clendenin Earns All-America In The 200 Fly At The 2009 NCAA Men's Swimming Championships

University of Mary Washington sophomore Stephen Clendenin gained All-America honors for the first time on Friday at the NCAA Division III Swimming Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., breaking his own school and conference record in the 200 yard butterfly by a half second.

Clendenin picked up his first career All-America award by touching the wall in the 200 fly in 1:51.59.  He earned a berth in the consolation championship race by placing 16th in the morning trials, covering the course in 1:51.72.

Clendenin competed in three events at the 2009 national championships.  He was 22nd in the trials of the 400 individual medley (4:03.16) and 34th in the 200 IM (1:54.93).

The Eagles placed 53rd out of 57 teams that scored in the championship with four points.

Marymount University senior sprinter Greg Murtha also competed at this year's national championship event, but did not qualify for the evening championship competition in any of his three events.

Murtha placed 43rd in the 100 butterfly (51.97), 55th in the 50 freestyle (21.56) and 60th in the 100 freestyle (47.88).
