Mary Washington Holds Commanding Leads Heading Into Final Day Of 2010 CAC Men's And Women's Swimming Championship

Mary Washington continued to pull away in the team standings and holds commanding leads in both the men's and women's team totals heading into the final day of competition at the 2010 CAC Swimming Championships.

The Eagles won six of seven men's events Saturday to compile 637 team points.  York, which gained the only other gold medal Saturday, is second in the team standings with 458 points, well ahead of third-place St. Mary's (274).  Salisbury (246 points)and Marymount (205 points) are trying to catch the host Seahawks for third place.  Hood (130) is just ahead of Gallaudet (122) for sixth place.

In the women's standings, UMW (639) boasts a 221.5-point lead over second-place St. Mary's (417.5) heading into Sunday's final day of competition.  Marymount is third in the women's chase with 323 points, followed by York (267), Salisbury (242.5), Gallaudet (109) and Hood (98).

In the men's action, UMW started the night winning the 200 medley relay (1:36.11) and finished with a gold medal in the 800 freestyle relay (6:55.49, NCAA "B" cut).

In between, junior Stephen Clendenin won the 400 IM (4:01.81, NCAA "B" cut), sophomore Billy Norfolk won the 100 butterfly (51.23, NCAA "B" cut), junior Brad Dunn won the 200 freestyle (1:44.85) and sophomore Austin Clark captured the 100 breaststroke (59.49) to help the Eagles control the team standings.

York junior A.J. Bean took top honors in the 100 backstroke (54.44) to help the Spartans position themselves for another second place finish in the team standings.

In the women's competition, Mary Washington also swept the relays, winning the 200 medley relay in 1:46.87 (CAC and Championship meet record; NCAA "B" cut) and the 800 freestyle relay in 7:55.86.

Junior Sarah Crockett took top honorsin the 200 freestyle (1:52.04, CAC record and NCAA automatic qualifier) and sophomore Megan DeSmit touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.91, CAC and Championship meet record; NCAA "B" cut) to lead the Eagles.

St. Mary's second-place charge was aided by back-to-back wins by freshman Kelly Heyde in the 400 IM (4:31.74, CAC record; NCAA "B" cut) and senior Rachel Hotchko in the 100 butterfly (56.63, NCAA "B" cut).  Heyde, who won the 200 IM title Friday, picked up her second individual gold medal of the weekend.

Marymount sophomore Anna Macedonia also earned a trip to the top of the podium Saturday by touching the wall first in the 100 backstroke.  Macedonia's time of 58.48 was a full second ahead of the pack and an NCAA "B" cut, helping the Saints to third place in the team standings.

Sunday's final day of competition will feature five individual events, including the 1,650 freestyle, and the meet-ending 400-yard freestyle relay.  Prior to Sunday evening's competition, the annual "Parade of Seniors" will honor those competing in the championship for the final time in their careers (beginning at 5:30 p.m.).
