Walchuk's Late Wins Propel St. Mary's Men's Swimming Past Salisbury, 132-130; York Also Secures CAC Victory

St. Mary's men's swimming team won a thriller over Salisbury on Saturday to highlight action around the CAC this weekend. York also posted a CAC win over Marymount, while Frostburg State and Mary Washington dropped non-conference dual meets. 

In Salisbury, Md., St. Mary's posted a come-from-behind 132-130 victory in its CAC regular-season finale at Salisbury. St. Mary's (6-8, 3-2 CAC) and Salisbury (2-7, 1-4 CAC) each won seven events in the 14-event dual meet. The Seahawks overcame an 88-81 deficit with key wins by sophomore Matt Walchuck down the stretch in the 400 freestyle and the 200 individual medley.

Walchuck's first-place finish in the 400 free returned the lead to the Seahawks, 108-99, with three events remaining. Salisbury claimed the next event, 100 butterfly, to close the gap to 117-109 before Walchuck struck again in the 200 IM for a 128-117 SMCM lead with the 400 freestyle relay remaining. Three Salisbury swimmers recorded a trio of first-place finishes on the day - juniors Will Gough and Jake Blazer along with senior Daniel Keller. Gough's first-place mark in the 50-meter freestyle of 24.04 broke an 11-year-old Maggs Physical Activities Center pool record. 

York defeated Marymount 121-79 in the other CAC weekend meet. Sophomore Russell Stoll and freshman Morgan Schreiber each earned a pair of wins for the Spartans. Stoll claimed victories in the 1,000 freestyle (10:28.50) and the 200 backstroke (2:00.45), while Schreiber touched first in the 200 butterfly (2:04.10) and the 500 freestyle (4:59.77). 

Mary Washington dropped a 151-108 decision to visiting Gettysburg on Saturday at Goolrick Natatorium, dropping the Eagles to 6-3 on the season.  The Eagles were victorious in the 200 yard medley relay, as Sean MayerVance SolsethAlex Anderson, and Matthew Garstka touched first at 1:36.32. Zach Eisig won the 1000 freestyle at 10:11.16, Anderson won the 50 freestyle at 20.92, and Anderson won the 200 backstroke at 1:54.83. Kenyon Huber-Wilker won the 200 breaststroke at 2:13.13, and Eisig won the 500 freestyle at 4:55.75.

Frostburg State fell to Davis & Elkins 114-83 on Friday night. Freshman Christian March won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.16 and the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:00.65.
