Mary Washington's Alex Anderson Grabs Gold in 200 Butterfly in NCAA Record Time; York's Kyle Walthall Claims 4th in 100 Breaststroke

Mary Washington senior Alex Anderson wrapped up his remarkable career in grand fashion on Friday night, breaking the NCAA Division III record in the 200 yard butterfly en route to his fourth career national championship on day three of the NCAA Championships in Shenandoah, Texas.

York junior Kyle Walthall also raced to an impressive finish on Friday, taking fourth in the 100 breaststroke in the first of his two events at the championship meet.

It was Anderson, however, who stole the show on Friday night, as the UMW senior capped off his stellar career with a time of 1:44.93 in the 200 butterfly, besting the previous NCAA record of 1:45.01 that was set by Middlebury's John Dillon in 2010. His time was also nearly two full seconds than his previous season best.

From the start, Anderson and Jeff Depew of Redlands battled from the front, taking the early lead and trading first place. Anderson edged ahead in the final 50 yards, and edged Depew at the pad by .52 of a second.

In the 2015 championship meet, Anderson has now collected a gold (200 fly) and two silvers (200 IM, 400 IM). Anderson won the national championship in the 400 IM in 2013, the 200 fly and the 400 IM last year, and now adds another 200 fly title, along with the national record. He also collects his ninth All-America award. In all three of his events this week, he bettered the previous NCAA record.

Walthall also made history of his own on Friday, becoming the first York swimmer in program history to place in the championship finals in any event. The junior placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.64, earning All-America status for the third time in his career.

Walthall started the day in record-setting fashion in the preliminaries as he broke his own school and CAC record with a time of 54.49, surpassing his old mark of 55.42. He returns to the pool tomorrow for the 200 breaststroke.
