FREDERICKBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior Grayson Reid and Frostburg State sophomore John Kerns were selected as the CAC Men's Track & Field Athletes of the Week for Jan. 23, 2017.

Christopher Newport senior Grayson Reid was named the CAC Track Athlete of the Week after record-breaking performances at the CNU Holiday Open and an impressive finish in the mile at the Captains Invitational. At the CNU Holiday Open, Reid broke the conference and school record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:17.49. Later, he returned to the track and established another school record in the 3,000 with an 8:25.50 clocking. His 5,000 time ranks first in Division III while his 3,000 time is second nationally. Last week, Reid notched a victory in the mile at the Captains Invitational with a time of 4:17.53, which places him sixth in the country,

Frostburg State sophomore John Kerns was selected as the CAC Field Athlete of the Week after opening the spring side of the indoor schedule with ECAC qualifying marks in the weight throw. Kerns won the weight throw at the WVU Open with a toss of 16.38 meters, and captured second in the same event at the Orange and Maroon Open hosted by Susquehanna (15.10 meters). His 16.38-meter toss ranks second in the CAC and 37th in Division III.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

All eight CAC track & field teams have opened their indoor seasons ... Christopher Newport's Brendon Burrows posted the conference's top effort in the shot put during the CNU Holiday Open (14.95m), which ranks 41st nationally. He also added the top effort among Division III competitors in the shot during the Captains Invitational on January 20 with a 14.22-meter toss ... Mary Washington freshman Rajai Walton captured three top-10 finishes at the University of Maryland Terrapin Invitational on Saturday. The freshman finished fifth in the high jump at 1.93 meters, sixth in the long jump at 6.70 meters, and 10th in the triple jump at 12.82 meters. Daniel Forjan picked up a pair of top tens in the shot put and weight throw ... Southern Virginia competed at the Captains Invitational at CNU. In the mile, Michael Myers set a new school record with a time of 4:31.69 for the Knights. Derek Blasko set a personal record in the shot put with a toss of 13.96m, which ranks third in the CAC ... Wesley freshman Tre' Johnson placed third in the triple jump at the University of Maryland Terrapin Invitational with a leap of 14.19 meters (46-06.75). Johnson ranks second in the Mideast Region and is tied for 11th in Division III. In his collegiate debut, Wesley freshman Thomas Kalieta Jr. earned a pair of top-five finishes at the University of Maryland's Terrapin Invitational. Against Division I and II competition, Kalieta picked up the silver medal in the 300-meter dash (36.02) and finished fifth in the 200-meter dash (22.72). Kalieta has the top time in the Mideast Region in 200 meters ... York junior Brian Koonce won the pole vault at the Coach I Open on Jan. 13 with a height of 3.96 meters, and followed that with a win at the Susquehanna Indoor Orange and Maroon Classic last Friday, clearing a best height of 4.10 meters.
