YORK, Pa. -- Christopher Newport senior JJ LaPointe secured CAC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors for Sept. 5, 2017.

Christopher Newport senior JJ LaPointe secured CAC Athlete of the Week honors after winning the 5k at the Mary Washington Cross Country Opener last Friday at the Clift Farm Road Course. LaPointe posted a time of 14:50.0, which topped the next closest competitor by over 18 seconds. His performance also helped CNU secure the team title as nine Captains finished in the top-10 during the competition, leading the squad to a score of 19.

Christopher Newport is ranked No. 8 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Preseason National Rankings, while York is receiving votes ... Frostburg State junior Robert Romano paced the Bobcats to a seventh-place team finish at the Galen Piper XC Challenge at Shippensburg. Romano finished 27th in 20:28. Sophomore Jacob Rickards was the second Bobcat finisher in 21:31 ... Mary Washington hosted Christopher Newport, Marymount, and Southern Virginia on Sept. 1, placing second. The Eagles were led by sophomore Jeff Gibson, who finished second overall at 15:08 ... Marymount senior Joel Juarez was the first Saint to cross the finish line on Friday at the UMW XC Opener hosted by Mary Washington, completing the 5k course in a time 18:28.2 which was good enough for a 49th place finish ... Salisbury freshman David Strickland finished second with a time of 25:44.25 in his first collegiate race at the Salisbury Fall Classic. Strickland finished less than five seconds behind first-place finisher Quinn Schneider from the United States Naval Academy ... York freshman Jake O'Neill made a successful debut on Friday night at the Piper XC Challenge hosted by Shippensburg. O'Neill was York's top finisher, crossing the line in a time of 20:51 to lead a pack of eight straight Spartans in the race.
