St. Mary's Chooses Crystal Gibson As Its Women's Basketball Coach

Scott Devine, the director of Athletics and Recreation at St. Mary's College of Maryland, exclaimed Tuesday morning, "It is my pleasure to announce Crystal Gibson as our next head women's basketball coach." Gibson becomes the 13th mentor in the 30-year history of the program.

After 16 seasons as the head women's basketball coach at Stevenson, Chris Ramer has announced his resignation. He will continue to serve as the University's assistant athletic director and head men's golf coach.

Marymount University’s women’s basketball senior forward Maame Amponsah was named to the Division II-III All-State Team by The Richmond Times Dispatch, as announced on Tuesday. Amponsah was also previously named Capital Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Year, D3Hoops.com All-Region and Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District.

St. Mary's senior Jamie Roberts keeps herself a little busy during the academic year. She starts the year playing defense on the soccer team, spends the winter running up and down the basketball court and breaks into the spring rejecting shots as the goalie on the women's lacrosse team. In between, she's a standout student and a leader on the SMC and CAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committees. The York College women's basketball team ran into a red hot Christopher Newport squad in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament as the host Captains downed the Spartans 81-52 in the opening round on Friday night in Newport News, VA.

Dominant frontcourt seniors Maame Amponsah of Marymount University and Angie Owens of Wesley College were named co-winners of the 2011 CAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year award in a vote of the conference coaches. York's Kristen Haley was selected as the 2011 Rookie of the Year while Spartan mentor Betsy Witman was honored by her peers as the Coach of the Year for the second time in the last three seasons.

York senior Jaimie Sapp poured in a game-high 23 points and freshman Kristen Haley added a double-double of 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to lead the Spartans to a 70-66 victory over Wesley in the 2011 CAC Women's Basketball Championship Game. It's the first CAC crown in team history for the third-seeded Spartans.

For the first time in CAC women's basketball history, the top two teams from the regular season will both be on the sidelines during the championship game. Despite losing at regular-season champ Mary Washington Saturday, Wesley will also host a playoff contest by virtue of its tiebreaker advantage vs. Frostburg State, which defeated playoff-bound St. Mary's to close out the regular season.
