22-Straight - That's Mary Washington's Streak In CAC Women's Swimming Team Championships

The University of Mary Washington women's swimming team remained as the only team in any Capital Athletic Conference sport to win every single conference title, claiming the program's 22nd straight crown on Sunday in St. Mary's City, Md.  There was a challenge from host St. Mary's, but in the end, the Eagles pulled away again for the title.

The Eagles compiled 924.5 points to capture the crown.  St. Mary's, led by Coach of the Year Andre Barbins, placed second for the fifth-straight year with 678.5.  Marymount moved up to third place, scoring 427 points, while York (366) was fourth, Salisbury (307) was fifth, Hood (178) was sixth and Frostburg State (132) was seventh.

Marymount senior Anna Macedonia successfully defended her 2011 CAC Swimmer of the Year award.  Macedonia, the winner of the 200 freestyle who also anchored the top 4x100 relay squad in the last event of the three-day weekend championship meet, is the first Saint swimmer to win the title twice during her career.

The Rookie of the Year award went to UMW's Amber Kerico.  She is the second-straight Eagle, and eighth in the last nine years, to be selected by the CAC Coaches for the Rookie of the Year award.

On Sunday, the Eagles gained wins from senior Kelly Scott in the 200 yard backstroke at 2:09.69 and senior Megan DeSmit in the 200 yard breastroke at 2:20.61, with Kerico taking second at 2:20.84 - both of which are NCAA provisional qualifying times, and both broke the old conference and meet records.

But the Eagles did not sweep gold medals on Sunday.  York senior Michaela Guild captured top honors in the 1,650 freestyle and St. Mary's junior Kelly Heyde captured gold in the 200 butterfly.
