Southern Virginia Senior Penny Gwynn Selected as CAC Volleyball Player of the Week

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Southern Virginia senior Penny Gwynn was selected as the CAC Volleyball Player of the Week for Oct. 16, 2017.

Southern Virginia senior Penny Gwynn was selected as the CAC Player of the Week for the second time this season after leading the Knights to a 4-0 week without dropping a set, stretching their winning streak to 13 games. Gwynn averaged 5.17 kills per set while hitting .284. She averaged 5.7 points per set in the victories over Hollins, York, Penn State Harrisburg, and Bridgewater (Va.). Gwynn recorded at least 13 kills in each contest while also contributing 1.58 digs per set and adding six blocks for the week. For the season, Gwynn leads the CAC with 4.30 kills per set.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Christopher Newport is No. 23 in the American Volleyball Coaches' Association Oct. 10 National Rankings ... CNU and Southern Virginia are both 5-0 in CAC play ... Christopher Newport sophomore Katie Piper led the Captains to a pair of victories during the week. On Tuesday, she clubbed seven kills while hitting .353 during two sets of work against William Peace. On Thursday, she came back with her fifth double-double of the year after collecting 15 kills and 15 digs during a 3-2 triumph at Mary Washington ... Frostburg State senior Madelyn Torres handed out a total of 57 assists in two wins last week. She also notched 12 kills, 22 digs and two service aces ... Mary Washington sophomore Savannah Powers averaged 15 kills per match in three UMW contests this week, including 17 in a 3-2 loss to CNU ... Marymount junior Caroline Hanson led the Saints to two CAC wins last week, averaging 13.0 kills, 18.5 assists, 7.0 digs and 1.5 service aces. She just missed her nation leading seventh triple-double against the Seahawks. Her 20 assists against Wesley were two shy of her season high set at Virginia Wesleyan ... Hannah Krauss paced St. Mary's in kills and points this past week. Krauss notched a career-best 13 kills against Wesley and tallied three block assists against Salisbury ... Salisbury junior Nicole Venturelli led the Sea Gulls with a match-high 21 kills in the team's win at St. Mary's on Saturday, and came up one dig shy of a double-double. This is the 21st consecutive match this season that Venturelli has posted double-digit kills. She remains atop the conference with 335 kills this season and is second in the conference averaging 4.29 kills per set ... In two conference matches last week, Wesley's Jessica Tynes recorded 23 kills, 26 digs and eight blocks. Tynes registered a kill-dig double-double in Wesley's four-set win over St. Mary's ... York junior Alexis Harbold had a record-setting individual week for the Spartans. On Saturday, Harbold set a new school record with 52 digs in the tightly contested five set loss at Frostburg State. Harbold averaged a ridiculous 10.40 digs per set for the five set thriller. She also had one kill, three assists, and three service aces in the match. Earlier in the week, she had 34 digs in the five set win over Elizabethtown. She added one kill and one assist in the win over the Blue Jays. On Friday, Harbold had 14 digs in three sets against Southern Virginia. For the week, Harbold totaled 100 digs in three matches (13 sets), good for an average of 7.69 digs per set. For the season, Harbold leads the CAC in total digs (453) while she is second in digs per set (5.33).
