FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior Katelyn Newsome was named the CAC Volleyball Player of the Week for Oct. 23, 2017.

Christopher Newport senior Katelyn Newsome was named the CAC Player of the Week after leading the Captains on both sides of the ball with a .333 hitting percentage and 18 blocks in a 3-0 week. In wins over St. Mary's, Southern Virginia, and Frostburg State, she averaged 2.80 kills and 1.80 blocks per set. Her finest performance came against Southern Virginia on Friday in a showdown between the last two remaining undefeated teams in league play. Against the Knights, she posted 11 blocks and 10 kills. With that performance, she became the first Captain to register double-digit figures in both categories in a single match since 2014. Her 11 blocks also equaled the fourth-highest single-match total in program history and the most ever in a four-set tilt. Along with her performance against SVU, she added a pair of nine-kill outings against St. Mary's on Wednesday and Frostburg State on Saturday. She also posted six blocks in the sweep over the Seahawks. With her performance during the week, she took over the conference lead with 90 blocks this year.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Christopher Newport is No. 23 in the American Volleyball Coaches' Association Oct. 17 National Rankings ... In the first NCAA Regional Rankings of the year, CNU is ranked No. 5, Salisbury is No. 9, and Mary Washington is No. 10 in the Mid-Atlantic Region ... With two matches remaining in conference play for most teams, Christopher Newport (7-0) sits alone in first place, while York (5-2), Southern Virginia (5-2), Mary Washington (5-2), and Salisbury (5-3) have clinched playoff spots ... Frostburg State senior Lindsey Scepura posted 54 digs in two matches for the Bobcats ... Freshman Tenley Hares turned in a .400 hitting week for Mary Washington, as the Eagles won three matches. She had six kills with no errors in nine attempts in a 3-0 win at Gallaudet, and then had nine kills against Frostburg and 10 against Southern Virginia over the weekend. She hit .404 (25 kills, four errors, 52 attempts) and added seven digs and three blocks ... Marymount sophomore Theresa Buscemi played in all nine sets for the Saints this past week, while recording a career-high 32 digs against Salisbury on Tuesday night ... Meghan Kelley tallied 25.5 points, 25 kills, and 12 digs to lead St. Mary's this week, including 16 kills against Goucher and seven digs at No. 23 Christopher Newport ... Alexis Howatt helped Salisbury to a 2-1 record over the weekend and 3-1 week overall with the only loss coming to York in a thrilling five set match on Friday night. The Sea Gulls swept Saturday's matches behind Howatt's combined 32 assist's against Penn State Harrisburg and Arcadia. In Salisbury's 3-1 victory over Arcadia, Howatt achieved the milestone of the 1,500th assist of her career for the maroon and gold. She now sits at 1,514 for her career moving her into seventh place all-time in program history surpassing former teammate Rachel Pierson ... Wesley senior Tionne Graves-Brown picked up three kill-dig double-doubles on the week for the Wolverines. She totaled 41 kills, 36 digs, nine blocks and five service aces ... York junior Eryn Brady led the Spartans to a trio of key CAC wins as the Spartans improved to 5-2 in the league. York surpassed it's conference win total from last year with the three five set wins for the week. Brady began the week with 10 kills in 19 attempts in the 3-2 win over Marymount on Wednesday. She added a dig, three block assists and one solo block for 12.5 points in the victory. On Friday, Brady helped the Spartans snap a 15-match losing streak to Salisbury as she registered a career-high 18 kills. Brady hit .372 with one dig, and one block assist for 18.5 points in the 3-2 victory over the Sea Gulls. Brady closed out her stellar week with 14 kills in 36 attempts in the 3-2 win at Wesley. She also had three digs and 14 points for the Spartans as York improved to 19-7 overall. For the season, Brady is second on the team in attack percentage (.243), third in kills per set (2.19), and second in total kills (206).
