YORK, Pa. -- Salisbury junior Zach Schmelz and Christopher Newport senior Dominique Torres earned CAC Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards for Jan. 31, 2017.

Salisbury junior Zach Schmelz was selected as the CAC Track Athlete of the Week after notching three top-10 finishes at the Patriot Games. In his first event of the day, the 200-meter dash, Schmelz finished just fractions of a second behind the top three finishers to place fourth in a time of 22.92 seconds. He followed that up with a another fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line in a time of 50.54. His 400 time ranks second in the CAC and 34th in Division III. In the 4x400 relay, Schmelz helped the Sea Gulls capture a first-place finish in 3:23.41. The 4x400 time ranks atop the conference and seventh nationally.

Christopher Newport senior Dominique Torres was tabbed as the CAC Field Athlete of the Week after posting the 10th-best time in Division III in the triple jump at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational on Saturday at Liberty. Torres secured a distance of 14.26 meters to take fourth overall and first among Division III competitors. His mark is the longest in the CAC this year.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

All eight CAC indoor track & field squads competed last week, marking the first time of 2017 that all CAC teams were in action ... The CAC Indoor Track & Field Championships are set for Saturday, Feb. 18 at Christopher Newport ... Christopher Newport's Ryan Scott led the Captains with three top-10 efforts at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational on Saturday at Liberty. Scott placed eighth overall and first among Division III competitors in the 200 (22.14). Adjusted for the banked track, his converted time of 22.54 leads the CAC and ranks 23rd in the NCAA this year. Scott also ran the third leg on the squad's 4x400-relay, which finished sixth in 3:21.20. Adjusted for the banked track, their converted time of 3:24.42 ranks second in the CAC and 17th in the NCAA. Additionally, Scott finished sixth in the 60-hurdles with a time of 8.23 ... Frostburg State freshman Kevon Adams led the way for the Bobcat men at the 18th Annual Bison Open at Bucknell. Adams posted the team's best-individual finish as he took home fifth place in the long jump at 6.49 meters ... Mary Washington freshman Jeff Gibson ran a new personal best in the 5,000-meters at George Mason with a time of 15:21, placing him in third in the race on Friday. Freshman Cameron Rauch also scored a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash in 22.89. Fellow freshman David Danek finished fourth in high jump with a clear of 1.94 meters ... Penn State Harrisburg sophomore Vladhimir Theophile placed fourth overall and first among Division III participants in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.38 at the Bison Open at Bucknell ... Salisbury's Andrew Volz placed third in the shot put at the Patriot Games, recording a distance of 46'-8.75" to secure the highest placing of any Salisbury male at the event ... Southern Virginia competed for the second time in program history, this week at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational at Liberty. Derek Blasko threw a person best 12.87 meters in the shot put, while Colter May finished eighth in the 5,000 meters at 16:51.46 ... Wesley competed at the Wesley Brown Invitational at Navy. Rayshawn McRae registered three top-10 finishes in the jumps taking fifth in the high jump (1.84m) and the triple jump (6.29m) while adding a ninth-place leap in the long jump with a mark of 6.29 meters. Greg Taylor finished second in the 60-meter dash at 6.93 seconds, .02 seconds shy of the first place time. Taylor also placed 10th in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 22.85 seconds.
