FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Penn State Harrisburg's Jalil Clayton and Southern Virginia's Derek Blasko were selected as the CAC Men's Track & Field Athletes of the Week for Jan. 22, 2019.

Penn State Harrisburg's Jalil Clayton had a huge weekend at St. Thomas Aquinas' Spartan Invitational on Friday night, Jan. 11 and TCNJ"s Lions Indoor Invitational the next day. The senior set a program record in the 60m hurdles thanks to a winning time of 8.15 seconds, good enough to rank tops in the conference and sixth in the nation. He followed it up by running a time of 8.18 in the even on Saturday, earning him the runner-up spot and the top finish among Division III competitors. He also came home 12th in the 200m dash with a scamper of 22.82 seconds, which when converted, ranks him fourth in the conference.

Southern Virginia senior thrower Derek Blasko finished second in the shot put at the Collegeville Classic with a toss of 15.04m, a new personal record. The throw places Blasko tied 32nd nationally and extends his lead in the Capital Athletic Conference.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Christopher Newport's Kurt Waller posted the top time in the conference and moved into the top-20 nationally in the 400 during the Keydet Invitational on January 19. During the meet, the junior finished the race in 49.72, which stands as the fastest clocking by a runner in the CAC this year. It also places him 17th in the nation and marks the sixth-fastest time by a Captain in program history. Along with his effort in the 400, he also completed the 200 in 22.60, which placed him second among Division III competitors at the meet and marked his top clocking of the year...York's Tucker Deacon had a strong performance at the Coach I Open hosted by Franklin & Marshall on Saturday in Lancaster. Deacon won the 1,000-meter run with a personal best time of 2:40.78. The Spartans swept the top six spots in the event. (York had their Saturday event at Susquehanna cancelled)...At the Marty Pushkin Classic at West Virginia University on January 11, Frostburg State's Shamar Nelson finished first in the 60-meter dash, finishing with a 7.03, an ECAC Qualifier. Nelson also jumped 6.44 meters to win the long jump at the same meet. John Kerns won the weight throw, throwing an ECAC Qualifier 16.82 meters. Kerns also placed fourth in shot put, throwing for 12.38 meters....Southern Virginia's Michael Myers was the only Knight to win an individual event at the Collegeville Classic, winning the mile run with a season's best time of 4:28.98...Penn State Harrisburg's Cameron Yon had one of his best weekends of the young season thanks to strong performances at St. Thomas Aquinas' Spartan Invitational and TCNJ's Lions Indoor Invitational two weeks ago. The senior was the top Division III finisher in the weight throw on Jan. 11, placing sixth in a field of 40 with his best toss of 15.69 meters. He followed it up the next day with a pair of impressive outings, with a top toss of 15.80 meters in the weight throw, good enough to earn him third place in the event, while he just missed out on a top-five finish in the shot put, as his top effort of 12.81 meters clinched sixth place. All of his efforts came against a combination of Division I, II and III athletes.
