YORK, Pa. -- Salisbury junior Connor Hesselbirg was named the CAC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week for Sept. 9, 2015.

Salisbury junior Connor Hesselbirg was named the CAC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week after finishing in sixth place at the Salisbury Fall Classic on Saturday. Hesselbirg ran his fastest career time on the Sea Gulls' home course of Winter Place Park at 26:37, helping lead Salisbury to a third-place team finish at the season-opening event. He was the fourth-fastest Division III competitor, as Salisbury was the second-best Division III school at the meet.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Nine of the 10 CAC cross country teams opened their 2015 campaigns last week ... Christopher Newport's Jeff Dover teamed with Evan Fabish for a fifth-place finish during the CNU Cross Country Opener, which was a relay meet in Richmond. Overall, Christopher Newport placed second as a team, finishing just behind William & Mary ... Frostburg State freshman Robert Romano kicked off his collegiate career by winning the 2015 Westmoreland Invitational. Romano captured the 5k race in 15:54 ... Mary Washington opened the new season and the Kunle Lawson coaching era by competing at the Christopher Newport Opener Relay event. The Eagles placed third, led by the duo of Chris Markham and Calhoun Stirling seventh with a time of 31:20 ... Marymount took sixth with 171 points at Salisbury, led by Collin Chartier in 16th place with a time of 27:09.33 ...  Alex Smith was York's top finisher at the Galen Piper Classic hosted by Shippensburg. Smith covered the course in a time of 20:46, good for an overall finish of 37th out of 121 runners.
